Should I continue working with Burnout? A psychological perspective

From a psychological perspective, in the case of manifest burnout, it is contraindicated in most cases to continue working. The state of being burned out is often characterized by deep exhaustion, detachment from work, and a feeling of lack of personal achievement.

Continuing to work intensifies the vicious cycle of overload, reduced performance, and compensatory efforts. This can lead to a chronification of symptoms and more serious psychological problems such as depression or anxiety disorders. Taking sick leave allows you to gain distance and focus on recovery. In milder cases, where there is only increased stress, reducing the workload in consultation with the treating doctor and after a careful analysis of working conditions may be sensible. It is important to set clear boundaries and define realistic goals to avoid overloading again.

A time-out should always be combined with therapeutic measures such as cognitive behavioral therapy or relaxation techniques to learn long-term strategies for coping with stress and changing unfavorable work patterns.

Preventing Burnout: Psychologically sound prevention

Preventing burnout requires a holistic approach that takes into account both individual and organizational factors. From a psychological perspective, the following aspects are particularly relevant:

  • Self-awareness and mindfulness: Learn to recognize your own stressors and stress limits early. Mindfulness exercises can help you be present in the current moment and perceive warning signals from your body.
  • Stress management techniques: Learning relaxation techniques such as Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Autogenic Training, or breathing exercises. These techniques help calm the autonomic nervous system and reduce stress reactions.
  • Resource management: Activate and maintain your personal resources. These include social contacts, hobbies, sporting activities, and sufficient sleep.
  • Setting boundaries: Learn to say "no" and to separate yourself from excessive obligations. This requires a realistic assessment of your own capacities and the ability to set priorities.
  • Finding meaning and value orientation: Reflect on your own values and goals. Find meaning in your work and align your actions accordingly. This can help maintain motivation and counteract a feeling of meaninglessness.
  • Workplace design: Pay attention to a positive work environment. Encourage exchange with colleagues, ensure a good work-life balance, and advocate for an appreciative corporate culture.

By integrating these psychological strategies into your daily life, you can strengthen your resilience and effectively prevent burnout. It is important to note that prevention is a continuous process that requires active engagement with your own needs and stresses.
