Psychologist & Counselor

It's wonderful that you've found our page for psychological support in Turku. We truly understand what it's like to be far from home. Expat life holds so many incredible opportunities, but it can also feel like an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and the feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of this can really take its toll. Especially as the days grow shorter and Finnish "Sisu" (willpower) is put to the test, homesickness can become overwhelming, and you might feel uprooted. Please know that you are not alone.

As an online psychologist, I understand the unique difficulties that you as an expat face. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep cropping up in everyday life, and that feeling of loss of identity that's so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be, especially in a city like Turku, where traditions are deeply rooted and adaptation takes time.

My goal here is to show you both local resources in Turku that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling services. These are specifically designed to support you as an expat – no matter where you are on your journey or what challenges you're facing. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can support you with advice and practical help.

    I am Sally Schulze

I often get asked: Sally, do you ever take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I'm passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage to do this by taking care of myself. For me, it's all about: Practise what you preach. So you'll find me not only at MentalStark, in TED talks or podcasting. No. You'll also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then get back to it with full energy.

Online Counseling for Expats

As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adapt to a new culture – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so out of place.

In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity questions are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Turku, but to lead a fulfilling life. Perhaps you feel particularly touched by Finnish melancholy or miss German directness – all of this is welcome here.

Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Expats

What specific psychological challenges do expats in Turku often experience?

Many expats in Turku struggle with adapting to Finnish culture, which is often perceived as reserved and introverted. The long, dark winter months can lead to seasonal depression (winter blues). Language barriers and difficulties integrating into social networks are also common problems. Job searching can also be frustrating, as the Finnish job market has specific requirements.

How can I cope with the "winter blues" and darkness in Turku?

Take advantage of the little daylight available: Take walks along the Aura River or visit the Botanical Garden. Light therapy can help increase serotonin levels. Eat a balanced diet and get plenty of exercise. Arrange to meet with others regularly to avoid social isolation. Expat communities in Turku can be a good place to start. Consciously plan activities that you enjoy to brighten your mood.

How do I find English-speaking psychological counseling in Turku?

The Compass Psychology practice in Turku offers psychological counseling in English (note that this was previously listed as German-speaking, but you specifically asked for a translation). Alternatively, there are numerous online services where you can connect with English-speaking psychologists from anywhere (such as here on HalloPsychologe.de). Waiting times for an appointment may vary, so it is advisable to inquire early. The costs for psychological counseling are partially covered by health insurance in Finland, but be sure to check the conditions beforehand.

How can I deal with culture shock in Turku?

Culture shock is normal! Allow yourself to feel foreign and uncomfortable. Learn about Finnish culture and customs in advance. Be open to new experiences and try to learn about Finnish customs (e.g. sauna, playing Mölkky). Connect with other expats in Turku to share your experiences. Learn the Finnish language to integrate better. Be patient with yourself – adaptation takes time.

What can I do about homesickness and isolation in Turku?

Maintain regular contact with family and friends back home. Cook your favorite dishes and uphold your traditions. Get involved in expat clubs or groups in Turku. Visit cultural events and museums to familiarize yourself with Finnish culture. Take trips to the surrounding area of Turku, e.g. to the archipelago or to Naantali, to discover the beauty of Finland. Sports activities in nature can help reduce stress and make new contacts.

How do language barriers affect my mental health and what resources are available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings and social isolation. Take language courses to improve your Finnish skills. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and ask for help. Apps and online tools can help with translation. Psychological counseling in your native language can help you cope with the emotional burdens. Try to focus on non-verbal communication and understand cultural differences.

What are the most common conflicts between expats and Finns and how can I deal with them?

Expats are often perceived as more direct and extroverted, while Finns tend to be reserved and communicate indirectly. This can lead to misunderstandings in communication. Be aware of these differences and try to adapt. Be patient and do not immediately interpret Finnish statements negatively. Address conflicts openly, but respectfully. Humor can help defuse tensions. Accept that there are cultural differences and try to learn from them.

Where can I find information about Finnish culture and customs in Turku?

The Turku City Library offers a wide selection of books and media about Finland and its culture. The Turku Museum Centre hosts exhibitions and tours that provide insights into the history and traditions of the region. On the official website of the City of Turku you will find information about current events and cultural offers. Expat clubs and organizations in Turku often offer information events and cultural activities. Talk to locals and ask them for their experiences and recommendations.
