Psychologist & Counselor

We're so glad you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in Turin. We understand what it's like to be far from home. Expat life holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and that feeling of straddling two worlds – it can all be quite nerve-wracking. Especially when you're sitting in your apartment in the evening, watching the lights of the Mole Antonelliana sparkle, homesickness can become overwhelming and the feeling of being uprooted can take over. You are not alone.

As an online psychologist, I understand the very specific difficulties that await you as an English-speaker abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep cropping up when ordering a Bicerin or queuing in front of Eataly, and that feeling of identity loss that's so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be.

My goal here is to show you both local options in Turin that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an English-speaker abroad - no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.

    I am Sally Schulze

I often hear the question: Sally, do you take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I succeed in this by taking care of myself. The following applies to me here: Practice what you preach. So you will find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks or when podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on a snowboard. In the picture here on the right I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. This is how I recharge my batteries and then start again at full speed.

Online Counseling for English-Speakers Abroad

As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adjust to a new culture – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so foreign.

In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways in which you can not only survive in Turin, but lead a fulfilling life.

Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from English-Speakers in Turin

What are the most common psychological challenges for English-speakers in Turin?

Many English-speakers in Turin struggle with feelings of isolation, especially if their professional network isn't strong yet. The Italian job market can be frustrating, and finding accommodation is often difficult. Cultural differences in communication styles can also lead to misunderstandings. Homesickness for familiar traditions and everyday life is another common factor.

How can I deal with finding accommodation and the Italian job market in Turin?

Finding accommodation requires patience and a willingness to adapt to Italian customs. Use local online portals and networks. For the job market, it is important to learn Italian and familiarize yourself with local application standards. Networking events and contacts with other expats can be helpful. Don't be afraid to seek support from local career advisors.

How do I find psychological counseling in English in Turin?

Since there are currently no known English-speaking psychologists directly in Turin, online counseling is a good alternative. You can access English-speaking psychologists from anywhere without long waiting times. Costs vary depending on the provider. Some health insurance companies may cover part of the costs of online counseling. Contact your health insurance company in advance.

How can I deal with culture shock in Turin?

Take time to get to know the city and its culture. Visit local markets such as the Mercato di Porta Palazzo, try Piedmontese cuisine in the numerous trattorias and get involved in local clubs or groups. Exchanging ideas with other expats can help you settle in faster and better understand cultural differences. Be open to new experiences, but also preserve your English roots.

What can I do about homesickness and isolation in Turin?

Keep in touch with family and friends at home, but also build a social network in Turin. Visit English-speaking meetups, get involved in international groups or seek contact with Italian neighbors. Sports clubs, language courses or cooking courses offer good opportunities to meet new people. Create small rituals that remind you of home, e.g. an English breakfast or reading English books.

How do language barriers affect my mental health, and what resources are available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings and social isolation. Use language courses and apps to improve your Italian skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help in everyday situations. Online translation tools can help in an emergency. If you feel overwhelmed, psychological counseling in English can help you deal with language-related challenges.

What are the biggest differences between English-speakers and Italians, and how can I deal with them?

English-speakers often value punctuality and direct communication, while Italians tend to be more flexible and indirect. In conflict situations, it can be helpful to take your time and consider cultural differences. Try to embrace the Italian ease and don't let small delays or detours upset you. Humor can help ease tensions and build bridges. It is important to accept the differences and not judge them.
