Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for psychological support in Stuttgart. I understand what it feels like to be far from home. Life as an expat offers so many amazing experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and that feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of this can really take a toll. Especially when the silence sets in, homesickness can become overwhelming and create a feeling of being uprooted. Please know that you're not alone.
As an Online Psychologist, I understand the very particular difficulties that await you as an expatriate. It’s often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It’s the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that repeatedly crop up in everyday life, and that feeling of loss of identity that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be. Perhaps you miss the cozy atmosphere of a Swabian wine festival, or the straightforward communication that is common in Swabia.
My goal here is to show you both local resources in Stuttgart that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an expat – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.
I often hear the question: Sally, do you take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert, and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I manage to do this by taking care of myself. Here, I believe in: Practice what you preach. So you'll find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks, or podcasting. No. You'll also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake, or snowboarding. In the picture here on the right, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge and then get back to it.
As a licensed Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as an expatriate deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.
For in-person appointments in Stuttgart, there are several psychologists who can provide you with professional support:
Dipl. Psych. Ronald Höfner
Psychologe
Kronprinzstraße 17
70173 Stuttgart, Deutschland
Dr. Karen Hamann
Psychologin
Feuerseeplatz 4
70176 Stuttgart, Deutschland
As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming the adjustment to a new culture can be – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so out of place.
In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues concern you, or homesickness weighs you down – together we will find ways for you not only to survive in Stuttgart, but to lead a fulfilling life. Maybe it helps to visit the Stuttgart Market Hall to feel at home, or to enjoy the view from the TV tower to gain new perspectives.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my Couples Counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory consultation with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are welcome to make appointments by e-mail. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together for you to not only survive in Stuttgart, but to really arrive.

In Stuttgart, challenges can arise related to the job market (e.g., high competition, specific industries), finding accommodation (limited availability, high prices), and integrating into the local community. The "Schaffen" (working hard) mentality and Swabian culture can take some getting used to for newcomers. Additionally, the distance from family can increase social isolation.
It is important to have realistic expectations and allow yourself time to adjust. Actively seek opportunities to make social contacts, e.g., in clubs, groups, or language courses. Use online networks and expat communities to exchange ideas and find support. Set small, achievable goals to create successes and boost your self-esteem. Explore the city and its surroundings to familiarize yourself with your new home.
In addition to the psychologists mentioned above (Dipl. Psych. Ronald Höfner and Dr. Karen Hamann), there are other resident psychologists in Stuttgart. You can also use online counseling services, such as here on this page. Waiting times for an appointment can vary, so it is advisable to inquire early. The costs for psychological counseling are usually covered by private health insurance or supplementary insurance. For those with statutory insurance, cost coverage is possible if a mental illness is present.
Culture shock is a normal process when adjusting to a new environment. Allow yourself to feel uncomfortable and grieve for what you have left behind. Try to discover and focus on the positive aspects of Stuttgart culture. Seek exchange with other expats to feel understood. Be open to new experiences and learn to appreciate the differences. If the symptoms of culture shock persist or significantly impair your well-being, seek professional help.
Plan regular contacts with family and friends back home, e.g., by video call. Make your home in Stuttgart as cozy and familiar as possible. Find hobbies and activities that you enjoy and distract you. Get involved in the community and help others. Visit events and shops with familiar foods to connect with your culture. If the homesickness becomes overwhelming, talk about it and seek professional support.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and social isolation. Take a language course to improve your German skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help and ask questions if you don't understand something. Use online translation tools and apps to facilitate communication. Seek contact with German-speaking expats and learn from their experiences. If language barriers affect your mental health, seek psychological counseling in your native language.
Swabians are considered thrifty, hard-working, and traditional. Directness and honesty are often valued but can also be perceived as gruff. It is important to respect local customs and adapt. Try to understand the humor and mentality of the Swabians. Be patient and give yourself time to adjust to the new environment. Speak openly about misunderstandings and look for joint solutions. Learn Swabian! A few phrases of Swabian can work wonders.
