Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in Stockholm. I understand what it feels like to be far from home. Stockholm, with its archipelago, the old town of Gamla Stan, and the long, dark winters, is a beautiful but also challenging city for expats. Life as an expat holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and that feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of this can really take a toll. Especially when the silence sets in, homesickness can become overwhelming and create a feeling of being uprooted. You are not alone.
As an online psychologist, I understand the very specific difficulties that await you as an expat. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the Swedish "Lagom" mentality, which can sometimes be difficult to understand, the subtle differences in communication, and that feeling of identity loss that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how exhausting that can be.
My goal here is to show you both local resources in Stockholm that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an expat – no matter where you are and what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can support you with advice and action.
I keep hearing the question: Sally, do you take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I manage to do that by taking care of myself. Here applies to me: Practise what you preach. So you will not only find me at MentalStark, in TED Talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then start again at full speed.
As a licensed psychological psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as an expat deserve special attention and understanding, because living between two cultures brings unique challenges.
Unfortunately, there are currently no resident English-speaking psychologists in Stockholm. The search for a therapist who speaks your native language can be especially important in a new environment. That's why I want to show you alternatives.
As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adapt to a new culture – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and you sometimes can't even explain why you feel so out of place.
In my online counseling, we create a safe space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Stockholm, but to lead a fulfilling life.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory meeting with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are also welcome to arrange appointments by e-mail. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together how you can not only survive in Stockholm, but really arrive.

Many expats in Stockholm struggle with adapting to Swedish culture, which is often perceived as more reserved and indirect. The long, dark winters can lead to seasonal affective disorder (winter depression). Other challenges include finding housing, making social connections, the language barrier (although English is widely spoken), and the high cost of living.
Light therapy is a proven method. Try to get as much daylight as possible, go for walks (even if it's cold), and consider using a special light therapy lamp. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and social activities can also help. If symptoms are severe, psychological counseling is advisable.
Since there are hardly any English-speaking psychologists locally, online counseling is a good option. Many therapists also offer sessions in English. Waiting times can vary, so it is best to inquire directly with the practices. The cost of psychological counseling is relatively high in Sweden. Some private health insurance companies cover part of the costs, so check with your insurance company.
Learn about Swedish culture in advance and try to be open to new things. Make contacts with other expats and Swedes, attend local events, and learn the language. Be patient with yourself and allow yourself to make mistakes. If you feel overwhelmed, seek psychological support.
Plan regular visits to your home country or stay in close contact with family and friends via phone and video calls. Find hobbies and get involved in clubs or groups with common interests. There are also expat communities and clubs in Stockholm that offer a good opportunity to connect. Remember that it's normal to feel homesick and be kind to yourself.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, social isolation, and a feeling of helplessness. Even though many Swedes speak English, it is important to learn Swedish to integrate better. There are numerous language courses in Stockholm. Online counseling in your native language can help you express your feelings and develop strategies to deal with the challenges.
A common point of conflict is the different communication styles. Expats are often more direct, while Swedes communicate more indirectly and consensus-oriented. It is important to understand the Swedish way of communicating and adapt your own communication accordingly. Be patient and avoid being too direct or critical. Another difference is the work-life balance. Swedes place great emphasis on leisure and family time, while expats are often more focused on performance and career. Try to find a balance that works for you and respect Swedish culture.
