Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
We're so glad you found our page for English-speaking psychological support in Sheffield. I understand how it feels to be far from home. Life as an expat holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and the feeling of standing with one foot in two worlds – all of this can be quite nerve-wracking. Especially when the silence sets in, the homesickness can become overwhelming and the feeling of being uprooted can arise. You are not alone. Sheffield, with its rich industrial history and friendly "Sheffielder" locals, can still feel lonely at times.
As an online psychologist, I understand the very particular difficulties that await you as a German speaker abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep cropping up in everyday life, and that feeling of loss of identity that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be. For example, the differences between German directness and British politeness can lead to misunderstandings.
My goal here is to show you both local options in Sheffield that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as a German speaker abroad – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.
I keep hearing the question: Sally, do you take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I manage to do this by taking care of myself. Here's what applies to me: Practise what you preach. So you'll find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then start all over again.
As a licensed psychological psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
A trusting relationship is particularly important to me in our collaboration. Your experiences as a German speaker abroad deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.
Unfortunately, there are currently no listed English-speaking psychologists in Sheffield. The search for a suitable therapist can be an additional burden. That's why I want to show you alternative ways to get psychological support in your native language.
You can use the following resources to search for local psychologists who may speak English:
Please note that the availability of English-speaking psychologists in Sheffield may vary and it is advisable to inquire about their qualifications and availability in advance.
As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adjust to a new culture – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so foreign.
In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Sheffield, but to lead a fulfilling life.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory meeting with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are also welcome to make appointments by email. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together for you to not only survive in Sheffield, but to really arrive.

German speakers in Sheffield may face challenges such as difficulties understanding British humor, which can be more subtle, integrating into the local culture, especially if living in heavily expat-populated areas, questions about the British education system for children. Finding accommodation can be difficult due to differences in rental practices and standards. General uncertainty regarding Brexit and its long-term impact on life in the UK can also be a stressor.
Join local groups and clubs to build a social network. Engage with the German community in Sheffield to connect with like-minded people. Be open to new experiences and try to actively engage in British culture by attending local events and learning about British traditions. If you have difficulties with finding accommodation, it is recommended to seek professional help. Stay informed about current developments related to Brexit and seek professional advice if necessary to deal with the uncertainties.
Since it can be difficult to find English-speaking therapists in Sheffield, online counseling is a good alternative. However, you can also ask local medical practices or hospitals if they have information on English-speaking therapists. Use online directories for psychologists and therapists in Sheffield and filter by language skills. Contact German associations or communities in Sheffield, as they may have recommendations for English-speaking therapists. I am also happy to offer you online counseling.
Acknowledge that culture shock is normal and takes time to adjust. Be patient with yourself and allow yourself to make mistakes. Learn about British culture and try to understand local customs. Seek exchange with other expats and locals to learn from their experiences and integrate better. Participate in local events and activities to get to know the city and its residents.
Maintain regular contact with family and friends in Germany. Make your home in Sheffield cozy and personal to feel more comfortable. Seek contact with other German speakers in Sheffield to exchange ideas and build a social network. Get involved in local clubs or groups to make new contacts and get involved in the community. Explore the city and its surroundings to discover new interests and distract yourself from the beauty of the region.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, isolation, and feelings of helplessness. Use language courses to improve your English skills. Speak openly about your difficulties and ask for support if you do not understand something. Use online translation tools and apps to facilitate communication. Seek contact with other expats who have had similar experiences to share and support each other. Online counseling in your native language can also be a great help here.
Differences in communication styles (direct vs. indirect), different understandings of humor and irony, as well as different ways of working (structured vs. flexible) can lead to misunderstandings. Be aware of cultural differences and try to understand the other person's perspective. Be open to compromises and adapt your communication style to the situation. Speak openly about misunderstandings and try to find solutions together. Humor can help to defuse tensions, but make sure that your humor is not misunderstood.
