Psychologist & Counselor

It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in St. Petersburg. I understand what it's like to be far from home. Life as an expat holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and the feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of this can really test your nerves. Especially when the long winter evenings bring silence, homesickness can become overwhelming, creating a feeling of being uprooted. You are not alone.

As an online psychologist, I understand the very specific difficulties that await you as an English speaker abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep cropping up in everyday life, and that feeling of loss of identity that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how exhausting that can be, especially in a city like St. Petersburg, which is so rich in history and yet so different from anything you know.

My goal here is to introduce you to online counseling specifically designed to support you as an English speaker in St. Petersburg – no matter where you are right now or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support. Unfortunately, there are currently very few English-speaking psychologists on the ground in St. Petersburg.

    I am Sally Schulze

I always hear the question: Sally, do you also take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage to do that by taking care of myself. The following applies to me here: Practise what you preach. So you will find me not only at MentalStark, in TED-Talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then start again at full speed.

My professional background

As a licensed psychological psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.

A trusting relationship is particularly important to me in our collaboration. Your experiences as an English speaker in St. Petersburg deserve special attention and understanding, because life in Russia brings unique challenges.

English-speaking Psychologists in St. Petersburg

Unfortunately, there are currently very few English-speaking psychologists in St. Petersburg. This can make it difficult to find suitable psychological support. Therefore, I would like to show you alternative ways in which you can still access psychological counseling in your native language.

Online Counseling for English Speakers Abroad

As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adapt to a new culture – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so alien, especially in the vibrant and culturally rich St. Petersburg.

In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues concern you, or homesickness weighs you down – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in St. Petersburg, but to lead a fulfilling life.

Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from English Speakers in St. Petersburg

What specific psychological challenges are commonly experienced by expats and English speakers in St. Petersburg?

Many English speakers in St. Petersburg face challenges such as adjusting to the Russian work environment, which often differs from that in Western countries. The long winters with little daylight can lead to seasonal depression. In addition, language barriers and a different understanding of bureaucracy can cause stress and frustration.

How can I deal with the challenges of the Russian job market?

It is important to find out about the customs in the Russian job market in advance. Build a network with other expats to share experiences and find support. Be patient and try to see cultural differences as an opportunity to learn. Online counseling can help you develop strategies for dealing with specific challenges.

How do I find English-speaking psychological counseling in St. Petersburg if there are few local options?

Since there are few English-speaking psychologists in St. Petersburg, online counseling is an excellent alternative. It offers you the opportunity to speak to a qualified psychologist in English from anywhere. Make sure that the online counselor has experience with the special needs of expats.

How do I deal with culture shock in St. Petersburg?

Culture shock is normal. Allow yourself to explore the new culture, but also cultivate your English-speaking roots. Get involved in English-speaking communities in St. Petersburg, learn the Russian language, be open to new experiences, but also allow yourself to cultivate English-speaking traditions. Psychological counseling can help you understand culture shock and deal with it constructively.

What can I do about homesickness and isolation in St. Petersburg?

Homesickness and isolation are common problems. Seek contact with other English speakers or expats in St. Petersburg. There are various groups and clubs where you can meet like-minded people. Use modern technology to keep in touch with family and friends at home. Plan regular activities that you enjoy and explore the city's cultural offerings. If the feelings become overwhelming, psychological counseling can help.

How do language barriers affect my mental health, and what resources are available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and social isolation. Try to learn Russian, even if it's just basic knowledge. Use translation apps to make everyday communication easier. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something. Online counseling in English can help you cope with the psychological stress caused by the language barrier.

What cultural differences between English speakers and Russians can lead to conflict, and how can I deal with them?

English speakers and Russians often have different communication styles and expectations. Directness and punctuality, which are valued in many Western countries, may be perceived differently in Russia. Try to empathize with Russian culture and adjust your expectations. Be patient and show respect for the local culture. In psychological counseling, you can learn to better understand cultural differences and deal with conflicts constructively.

Where can I find information about local support groups or psychological counseling centers (even if not English-speaking) in St. Petersburg?

Information about local support groups and counseling centers can often be found through online forums for expats in St. Petersburg or on the websites of the city administration. International organizations or embassies can also provide helpful information. Even if the services are not English-speaking, they can be a valuable support. Online counseling in English can help you use local services and process your experiences.
