Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in Rotterdam. I understand what it feels like to be far from home. Expat life brings so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and the feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of this can really take its toll. Especially when the silence sets in, homesickness can become overwhelming, creating a sense of being uprooted. You are not alone.
As an online psychologist, I understand the unique difficulties that await you as an expat abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that crop up in everyday life, and that feeling of identity loss that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how exhausting that can be. While Rotterdam's modern architecture and international flair can be impressive, they can also amplify the feeling of being a stranger.
My goal here is to show you both local resources in Rotterdam that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an expat abroad – no matter where you are on your journey and what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who truly understands your situation and can support you with advice and practical help.
I always hear the question: Sally, do you also take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert, and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I manage to do this by taking care of myself. Here, "Practice what you preach" applies to me. So you will find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake, or snowboarding. In the picture here on the right, I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. This is how I recharge my batteries and then start again full throttle.
As a licensed Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
A trusting relationship is particularly important to me in our collaboration. Your experiences as an expat abroad deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.

As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming adapting to a new culture can be – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so alien.
In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity questions are occupying your mind, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Rotterdam, but to lead a fulfilling life.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory meeting with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are welcome to make appointments by e-mail. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together for you to not only survive in Rotterdam, but to really arrive.

Many expats in Rotterdam experience challenges related to the housing market, which is often very competitive. Social isolation can also be a problem, especially if it is difficult to connect with the local culture. Cultural differences in the way of working can also cause stress. Psychological counseling can help you develop strategies to address these challenges.
For the tight housing market, it can be helpful to start searching early, use local networks, and learn about the customs of house hunting. To combat social isolation, it helps to actively participate in local events, attend language courses, or join expat and international clubs. To manage cultural differences in the workplace, it is important to be open, ask questions, and learn about the Dutch work culture.
In addition to the possibility of online counseling, there is the English-speaking psychologist Patric Esters, M.Sc. in Rotterdam. Information on waiting times, costs and insurance coverage can be obtained directly from the respective providers. Online counseling often offers a flexible and fast alternative.
Culture shock is a normal reaction to a new environment. It helps to actively engage with Dutch culture, learn the language, and set realistic expectations. Accept that it takes time to adjust and be patient with yourself. Seek exchange with other expats and individuals in Rotterdam to share experiences and find support.
Homesickness and isolation are common companions of expat life. Try to find a balance between nurturing your roots and immersing yourself in Dutch culture. Participate in activities that you enjoy, get involved in the community, and build a social network. Regular contact with family and friends can also help.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and social isolation. It is important to actively work on your language skills and attend courses. Don't hesitate to ask for help and use translation apps and services. If you feel overwhelmed, psychological counseling in your native language can be a great relief.
Germans often value directness and clear communication, while the Dutch prefer a more indirect, consensus-oriented approach. Work-life balance is also weighted differently. To avoid misunderstandings, it is important to learn about cultural differences and be open to other perspectives. Be prepared to adapt your communication style and seek conversation to find common ground.
