Psychologist & Counselor

Welcome! I'm so glad you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in Rome. I understand what it feels like to be far from home. Life as an expat holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and the feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of that can really take its toll. Perhaps as you stroll through the streets of Trastevere in the evening, gazing at the city lights, homesickness becomes overwhelming and you feel uprooted. Please know that you are not alone.

As an online psychologist, I truly understand the unique difficulties that await you as an English speaker abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the Roman "Dolce Vita," which is so different from the efficiency you may be used to, and that feeling of a loss of identity that is so difficult to grasp and put into words. I know how exhausting that can be.

My goal here is to show you both local options in Rome that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling services. These are specifically designed to support you as an English speaker abroad – no matter where you are in your journey and what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can support you with advice and practical help.

  • I am Sally Schulze

    I am Sally Schulze

I keep hearing the question: Sally, do you also take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage to do this by taking care of myself. The motto here is: Practice what you preach. So you will not only find me at MentalStark, in TED-Talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture on the right I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. This is how I recharge my batteries and then get going again.

Online Counseling for English Speakers Abroad

As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming adapting to a new culture can be – when the language is similar, but sounds different, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so foreign.

In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity questions are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Rome, but to lead a fulfilling life.

Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from English Speakers in Rome

What psychological challenges are particularly common among English speakers in Rome?

Many English speakers in Rome struggle with the slower pace of life, the bureaucracy, and the feeling of not really belonging. Job searching can be frustrating, as different qualifications and networks are often required. Finding accommodation is also often difficult and expensive. Social isolation is another problem, especially if language skills are not yet sufficient.

How can I deal with these challenges?

It is important to have realistic expectations and allow yourself time to adjust. Actively seek contact with other English speakers or international groups in Rome to build a social network. Get involved in local clubs or courses to learn the language and get to know the culture better. Accept that there will be ups and downs, and be patient with yourself.

How do I find psychological counseling in Rome?

You can contact the English-speaking psychologists Dr. Anne-Kathrin Loeser and Dr. med. Anne-Heide Henschel in Rome. Another option is online counseling, which offers you flexibility and the opportunity to speak in your native language. Waiting times for appointments may vary, so it is recommended to inquire early. The costs of psychological counseling in Italy vary and depend on the qualification and experience of the therapist. Italian health insurance usually only covers part of the costs.

How do I deal with culture shock in Rome?

Culture shock is a normal reaction to a new environment. Accept that it takes time to get used to the Roman culture. Be open to new experiences and try to enjoy the positive aspects of living in Rome. Seek exchange with other expats to feel understood and get tips. If you feel overwhelmed, do not hesitate to seek professional help.

What can I do about homesickness and isolation in Rome?

Homesickness is a normal feeling, especially in the beginning. Schedule regular phone calls or video calls with family and friends at home. Make your home in Rome cozy and personal to feel more comfortable. Explore the city and find places where you feel comfortable, such as parks, cafes or museums. Get involved in activities that you enjoy, such as sports, art or cooking. Join English or international groups to make new contacts.

How do language barriers affect my mental health and what resources are available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, isolation and the feeling of not being understood. Use language courses to improve your Italian skills. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and ask for help. There are many online resources and apps that can help you learn a language. If you feel psychologically stressed due to the language barrier, seek professional help from an English-speaking therapist.

What are the most common conflicts between English speakers and Italians and how can I deal with them?

Common conflicts arise from different communication styles, ways of working and expectations. English speakers often value punctuality and efficiency, while Italians prefer a more relaxed and flexible approach. Try to understand and accept the cultural differences. Be patient and avoid generalizing or judging. Address conflicts openly and respectfully, and look for compromises that are acceptable to both sides. Remember that humor is often a good way to reduce tension.
