Psychologist & Counselor

It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in Oslo. I understand what it's like to be far from home. Life as an expat holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and the feeling of straddling two worlds – all of this can really take a toll. The long, dark winters in Oslo can particularly affect your mood and amplify feelings of homesickness. Please know that you're not alone in this.

As an online psychologist, I understand the very specific difficulties that await you as an English speaker abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the Norwegian mentality, which can sometimes be difficult to understand, the high cost of living, and the feeling of having to find your way in a society that values equality and humility. I know how exhausting that can be.

My goal here is to show you both local resources in Oslo that can help you, as well as to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an English speaker abroad – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.

    I am Sally Schulze

I often hear the question: Sally, do you also take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage to do this by taking care of myself. Here applies to me: Practice what you preach. So you will not only find me at MentalStark, in TED-Talks or when podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right I enjoy the sun and the fresh sea breeze. This is how I recharge my batteries and then start again at full speed.

My Professional Background

As a licensed psychological psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.

In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as an English speaker abroad deserve special attention and understanding, because living between two cultures brings unique challenges.

English-Speaking Psychologists in Oslo

Currently, we have no information about explicitly English-speaking psychologists in Oslo who offer regular office hours. However, this does not mean that you cannot find support. There are several ways you can still receive psychological support in English:

  • Inquire at local practices: Many psychological practices in Oslo have staff who speak English or are willing to care for English-speaking clients. It is worth asking directly.
  • Online Counseling: A flexible and often faster option is online counseling, where you can speak to an English-speaking psychologist from anywhere.

I am happy to help you find the right solution for you. Don't hesitate to contact me.

Online Counseling for English Speakers Abroad

As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming the adjustment to a new culture can be – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so out of place.

In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is burdening you – together we will find ways how you can not only survive in Oslo, but lead a fulfilling life.

Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from English Speakers Abroad

What specific psychological challenges do English speakers in Oslo often experience?

Many English speakers in Oslo struggle with adapting to Norwegian culture, which is often perceived as more reserved and less direct than many Western cultures. The long, dark winter months can lead to seasonal depression (winter blues). The high cost of living and the difficulty of building a social network can also be stressful.

How can I deal with feelings of isolation and loss of social contacts?

It's important to actively seek opportunities for social interaction. Join English-speaking or international clubs in Oslo, attend language courses, or get involved in local initiatives. Use online platforms to find like-minded people. Plan regular video calls with family and friends to maintain connections. Remember that it takes time to make new friends, and be patient with yourself.

How do I find English-speaking psychological counseling in Oslo and what costs are involved?

Since there are few established English-speaking psychologists in Oslo, online counseling is a good alternative. The costs for online sessions vary depending on the provider. Find out about the prices and billing arrangements on the respective website. Some private health insurance companies may cover part of the costs of online psychotherapy. Check with your insurance company for the exact terms and conditions.

What are typical symptoms of culture shock and how can I deal with them?

Culture shock can manifest as feelings of homesickness, irritability, anxiety, frustration, and social isolation. To deal with it, it is important to learn about Norwegian culture and be open to new experiences. Seek contact with other expats to exchange ideas and find support. Try to develop a routine and take time for relaxation and self-care. If the symptoms persist or become severe, you should seek professional help.

How can I deal with homesickness and feelings of uprootedness in Oslo?

Homesickness is a normal feeling when living far from home. Allow yourself to feel your feelings and be sad. Make your home in Oslo as cozy as possible and create an environment in which you feel comfortable. Cook familiar foods, listen to English music or watch English movies to feel connected to home. Plan regular visits back home or invite family and friends to Oslo. But also focus on the positive aspects of your life in Oslo and discover the beauty of Norwegian nature and culture.

How do language barriers affect my mental health and what support is available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and social isolation, which can negatively affect mental health. It is important to actively work on your Norwegian language skills. Attend language courses, watch Norwegian films and series, or find tandem partners for language exchange. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something. Use apps and online translation tools to facilitate communication. If you feel stressed by the language barrier, psychological counseling in English can be helpful.

What are the biggest differences between English-speaking cultures and Norwegians and how can I deal with them?

People from many Western cultures are often perceived as more direct and open, while Norwegians tend to be more reserved and thoughtful. Norwegians place great emphasis on equality and humility (Janteloven), while individuality and achievement are often more emphasized in other cultures. To deal with these differences, it is important to be aware that there are different cultural norms. Try to adapt to Norwegian culture without denying yourself. Be patient and tolerant when misunderstandings occur. Talk openly about your experiences and feelings with trusted people or a psychologist.
