Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in New York City. I understand how it feels to be far from home. Life as an expat in the "city that never sleeps" holds so many exciting possibilities, but it can also be an emotional challenge. The hustle and bustle of the metropolis, the pressure to succeed professionally, the high cost of living – all of that can really take a toll on your nerves. Especially when you long for a piece of home and feel like you're getting lost in this giant concrete jungle. You're not alone.
As an Online Psychologist, I understand the very specific difficulties that await you as an expat abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle differences in mentality, the different way of maintaining relationships, and that constant feeling of having to prove yourself. I know how exhausting that can be.
My goal here is to show you both local resources in New York City that can help you, and to introduce you to my Online Counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an expat – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.
I keep hearing the question: Sally, do you take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I manage to do this by taking care of myself. The following applies to me here: Practise what you preach. So you will not only find me at MentalStark, in TED talks or when podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then get back to work.
As a licensed Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
A trusting relationship is particularly important to me in our collaboration. Your experiences as an expat deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.

As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adapt to a new culture – when the "New York Minute" stresses you out, the skyline is impressive, but the anonymity of the city feels oppressive, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so foreign.
In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is burdening you – together we will find ways how you can not only survive in New York City, but lead a fulfilling life.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from another cultural background – my Couples Counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory meeting with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are also welcome to make appointments by email. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together how you can not only survive in New York City, but really arrive.

Many expats in New York City struggle with the high pressure to perform, job market insecurity, especially in creative industries, and the extremely high cost of living. In addition, there is social isolation in the anonymity of the big city and culture shock, which can manifest itself in the unfamiliar directness of New Yorkers.
New York is known for its high work ethic. It is important to have realistic expectations and pay attention to your work-life balance. Schedule fixed leisure activities, use the many cultural offers of the city to relax and find a supportive network to exchange ideas and reduce the pressure.
There are several English-speaking psychologists in New York City that you can find through online directories or referrals (see above). Keep in mind that wait times can be long and costs are often higher than in your home country. A flexible alternative is online counseling, where you can speak to an English-speaking psychologist from the comfort of your own home. Waiting times are shorter and costs are often lower.
Culture shock is a normal reaction to a new environment. Allow yourself to feel foreign and actively seek contact with other expats to exchange experiences. Learn about American culture, be open to new experiences, and try to discover the positive sides of the city. Patience is important - adaptation takes time.
Homesickness is normal, especially in the beginning. Establish routines that give you a feeling of home (e.g. familiar breakfast, movies from your country). Seek contact with other expats in New York City (e.g. through clubs, meetups). Use social media to stay in touch with family and friends, but be careful not to overdo it. Get involved in local activities to meet new people and integrate.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and social isolation. Use language courses to improve your language skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something. Many organizations offer free or affordable language courses for immigrants. Online counseling in your native language can help you express yourself and process your feelings without having to restrict yourself linguistically.
Expats and Americans often differ in their communication style. Americans are often more direct and quicker to build relationships, while expats tend to be more reserved. Misunderstandings can also arise from different ideas about punctuality and hierarchy. Be aware of these differences, be open to other perspectives and try to adjust your expectations. Communication is key - address problems openly and try to find a common solution.
