Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
We're so glad you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in Madrid. I understand what it feels like to be far from home. Life as an expat holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of finding your feet in a new culture, and that feeling of standing with one foot in two worlds – all of that can really take its toll. Especially when the evenings in your apartment in Malasaña grow quiet, homesickness can become overwhelming, and you might feel uprooted. Please know you're not alone.
As an online psychologist, I understand the unique difficulties that await you as an expat abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances when sharing tapas, the small misunderstandings that keep popping up in everyday life as you try to communicate in Spanish, and that feeling of identity loss that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be.
My goal here is to show you both local options in Madrid that can help you, as well as to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an expat – no matter where you are right now or what challenges you're facing. Because sometimes you just need someone who truly understands your situation and can provide you with support and guidance.
I constantly hear the question: Sally, do you ever take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert, and entrepreneur, I'm passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I manage to do this by taking care of myself. For me, it's about practicing what I preach. So, you'll not only find me at MentalStark, in TED-Talks, or podcasting. No. You'll also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake, or snowboarding. In the picture here on the right, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then start again full throttle.
As a licensed Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as an expat deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.
For in-person appointments in Madrid, there are several English-speaking psychologists who can provide you with professional support:
Psicolive
Psychological Practice (German-speaking)
Calle de Goya, 57. 1º Derecha
28006, Madrid
As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adjust to a new culture – when the language is sometimes bumpy, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so foreign.
In my online counseling, we create a safe space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity questions occupy you, or homesickness weighs you down – together we will find ways how you can not only survive in Madrid, but lead a fulfilling life, perhaps with a walk through Retiro Park or a visit to the Prado Museum.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from another cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory consultation with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are also welcome to make appointments by e-mail. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together how you can not only survive in Madrid, but really arrive.

Many expats in Madrid struggle with challenges such as finding housing in popular neighborhoods like Lavapiés or the uncertain job market, especially in sectors like tourism. Social isolation can also play a role, particularly when it's difficult to move beyond superficial contacts. Confrontation with a different culture, where life is often more relaxed, can lead to frustration when you're used to German efficiency.
It's important to have realistic expectations about the Madrid job market and the housing situation. Get involved in local groups and associations to make social contacts and expand your network. Try to embrace the Spanish culture and focus on the positive aspects of living in Madrid. If you're struggling with the more relaxed lifestyle, try to find a middle ground that takes both your needs and the local culture into account.
One option for English-speaking psychological counseling in Madrid is the Psicolive practice. Online counseling offers another flexible option. Search online for "English-speaking psychologist Madrid" to find more options. It is advisable to make appointments early, as demand can be high. The costs for psychological counseling vary, and it is important to clarify insurance coverage in advance. Also inquire about self-help groups or counseling centers that may offer more affordable options.
Culture shock is normal. Allow yourself to feel uncomfortable and actively look for ways to better understand Spanish culture. Take language courses, attend cultural events, and exchange ideas with other expats. Accept that it takes time to adjust and be patient with yourself. If you feel overwhelmed, don't hesitate to seek professional help.
Regular contact with family and friends in your home country is important. Make your home in Madrid cozy and personal to create a sense of security. Find hobbies and activities that you enjoy and bring you into contact with other people. There are numerous expat groups in Madrid that organize regular meetings and events. Even a walk through Retiro Park can do wonders!
Language barriers can lead to frustration, isolation, and a feeling of helplessness. Use language courses and language tandems to improve your Spanish skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help and rely on other people if you have trouble communicating. Online translation tools can also be helpful. If the language barrier is severely affecting your mental health, psychological counseling in your native language can be very relieving.
Differences in punctuality, work ethic, and direct communication can lead to misunderstandings. Germans often value efficiency and planning, while Spaniards tend to be more flexible and spontaneous. It's important to be aware of these differences and be open to compromise. Try to embrace the Spanish equanimity and not let delays or unexpected changes upset you. Direct criticism can be perceived as rude in Spain. Choose your words carefully and try to give constructive feedback in a friendly way.
