Psychologist & Counselor

It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in London. I truly understand what it feels like to be far from home. Expat life holds so many incredible experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and that feeling of having one foot in two worlds – it can all take its toll. Especially when you're sitting in your flat in Shoreditch at night, watching the city lights sparkle, homesickness can become overwhelming and leave you feeling uprooted. Please know that you are not alone.

As an Online Psychologist, I understand the unique difficulties that await you as a German speaker abroad. It’s often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers when trying to order a pint at the pub around the corner. It’s the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep cropping up in everyday life, be it in the office in Canary Wharf or queuing at the bus stop, and that feeling of loss of identity that’s so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be.

My goal here is to show you both local resources in London that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as a German speaker abroad – no matter where you are and what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.

    I am Sally Schulze

I often hear the question: Sally, do you ever take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert, and entrepreneur, I'm passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage this by taking care of myself. The motto for me is: Practice what you preach. So, you'll find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks, or podcasting. No. You'll also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake, or snowboarding. In the picture here on the right, I'm enjoying the sun and fresh sea breeze. This is how I recharge my batteries and then get back to work with full energy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from German Speakers Abroad

What specific psychological challenges do German speakers in London often experience?

Many German speakers in London report challenges related to the competitive job market, particularly in industries such as finance and technology. High rental prices and the difficulty of finding affordable accommodation can also cause stress. Social isolation is another problem, as it can be difficult to form genuine friendships beyond superficial contacts. Cultural differences, even if subtle, can lead to misunderstandings and frustrations.

How can I deal with these challenges?

For the job market: Use professional networks such as LinkedIn and attend industry events in London. For housing: Look for cheaper options outside the city center and share an apartment. Against social isolation: Join German or international expat groups, get involved in hobbies and actively seek contact with locals. In case of cultural differences: Be open to new things, learn about British customs and openly address misunderstandings.

How do I find English-speaking psychological counseling in London?

In addition to Dr. Gabriele Scholtz mentioned above, you can use online platforms to find psychologists who speak German and specialize in the needs of expats. Waiting times for an appointment can vary, especially with local therapists. Online counseling often offers faster availability. The cost of psychological counseling in London can be high. However, some international health insurance policies cover part of the cost. It is advisable to clarify this in advance.

How do I deal with culture shock in London?

Culture shock is normal. Allow yourself to feel uncomfortable and seek exchange with other expats. Explore London consciously, from the museums in South Kensington to the markets in Camden. Get to know British culture by attending local events and learning about the history of the city. Be patient with yourself and don't expect to adapt perfectly immediately.

What can I do about homesickness and isolation in London?

Maintain regular contact with family and friends in Germany. Make your apartment cozy and personal to create a sense of home. Get involved in German associations or groups in London, such as the German YMCA or the German School London. Attend cultural events, such as the German Film Festival. Find a hobby that you enjoy and meet regularly with other people who share your interests.

How do language barriers affect my mental health and what resources are available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and social isolation. Use language courses to improve your English skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something. Use online translation tools and apps. If you feel overwhelmed, seek professional psychological counseling in your native language. There are also self-help groups for expats where you can share and find support.

What are the most common conflicts between German speakers and British people and how can I deal with them?

Differences in the directness of communication can lead to misunderstandings. German speakers often value direct and honest communication, while British people tend to be more indirect and diplomatic. Try to understand the British way of communicating and adjust your own communication accordingly. Be patient and avoid expressing criticism directly. Another difference is the importance of small talk. British people often use small talk to build a relationship, while German speakers tend to get straight to the point. Take time for small talk and show interest in your conversation partner.
