Psychologist & Consultant

It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in Lodz. I understand what it feels like to be far from home. Expat life holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of finding your way in a new culture – especially in a city with as much history as Lodz – and that feeling of having one foot in two worlds, can all take a toll. Especially when the silence sets in, homesickness can become overwhelming and the feeling of being uprooted can arise. You are not alone.

As an online psychologist, I understand the very particular difficulties that await you as an English speaker abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep cropping up in everyday life and that feeling of loss of identity that's so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how exhausting that can be, especially in a city like Lodz, where the history is ever-present.

My goal here is to show you both local resources in Lodz that can help you and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an English speaker abroad – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.

I often hear the question: Sally, do you ever take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage to do this by taking care of myself. The following applies to me here: Practise what you preach. So you will find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then start again at full speed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from English Speakers Abroad

What specific mental health challenges do English speakers in Lodz often experience?

Many English speakers in Lodz struggle with adapting to the Polish job market, which can differ in terms of hierarchies and communication styles. Finding accommodation can also be frustrating. Social isolation is another issue, especially if the language barrier makes it difficult to build friendships. Cultural differences, e.g. in terms of punctuality or small talk, can also lead to misunderstandings.

How can I deal with these challenges?

To better adapt to the Polish job market, learn about local customs and seek exchange with other expats. For apartment hunting, use local online portals and networks. To combat social isolation, take language courses, participate in expat meetings, and look for hobbies that bring you into contact with locals. Try to approach cultural differences with curiosity and openness, rather than seeing them as an obstacle.

How do I find English-speaking psychological counseling in Lodz?

Finding English-speaking psychological counseling in Lodz can be a challenge. One option is to search through online directories for international therapists. Alternatively, my online counseling offers a flexible and location-independent solution to discuss your concerns in your native language. Waiting times for appointments may vary, so it is advisable to inquire early. The costs of psychological counseling vary; find out in advance about the conditions and possibilities of reimbursement by your health insurance.

How can I cope with culture shock in Lodz?

Culture shock is a normal reaction to a new environment. Allow yourself to feel strange and uncomfortable. Learn about Polish culture and history to better understand the background of certain behaviors. Seek contact with other expats to exchange ideas and support each other. Discover the beautiful sides of Lodz, such as Piotrkowska Street, Manufaktura or the many parks, to feel comfortable.

What can I do about homesickness and isolation in Lodz?

Homesickness is a natural feeling when you are far from home. Plan regular phone calls or video calls with family and friends. Make your home in Lodz as cozy as possible, e.g. with photos or souvenirs from home. Get involved in local clubs or groups that match your interests. Attend English-speaking events or services in Lodz to feel connected to your culture.

How do language barriers affect my mental health and what resources are available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and social isolation, which can negatively affect your mental health. Use language courses, apps, or tandem partners to improve your Polish language skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something. Be patient with yourself and celebrate small successes in language learning. If the language barrier becomes too stressful, online counseling in your native language can be a valuable support.

How does German behavior differ from Polish behavior? How do I deal with it?

Germans often value directness and punctuality, while Poles tend to communicate more indirectly and are more flexible with time. When dealing with Poles, it is important to be patient and respectful. Try to interpret the non-verbal signals of your counterpart and adapt to the local communication style. Avoid criticism and express your opinion diplomatically. If there are misunderstandings, address them openly, but be careful not to hurt anyone.
