Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
It's wonderful that you've found our page for psychological support in Lille. I understand what it's like to be far from home. Life as an expat holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be a rollercoaster of emotions. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of finding your way in a new culture – and then there's the French "Savoir-vivre," which is sometimes so different from what you're used to – all of this can really take a toll on your nerves. Especially when you stroll through the old town of Lille and admire the beauty, but still feel alone, homesickness can become overwhelming. You are not alone.
As an online psychologist, I understand the very particular difficulties that await you as a German abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that arise at the bakery, in the supermarket, or on the metro, and that feeling of loss of identity that's so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be.
My goal here is to show you both local options in Lille that can help you and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as a German abroad – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.
I always hear the question: Sally, do you also take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I'm not burning out.
I succeed in doing this by taking care of myself. This is where "practice what you preach" applies to me. So you can find me not only at MentalStark, in TED talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then get back to full speed.
As a licensed psychological psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as a German abroad deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.
Unfortunately, there are currently no English-speaking psychologists available for in-person appointments in Lille. The search can be difficult, but I would like to show you alternative options:
As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adapt to a new culture – when the language sounds similar but is different, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so foreign.
In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways how you can not only survive in Lille, but lead a fulfilling life.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from another cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory meeting with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are welcome to make appointments by e-mail. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together how you can not only survive in Lille, but really arrive.

Many Germans in Lille struggle with the transition to French working life, which is often more hierarchical than in Germany. Finding an apartment can also be frustrating. Social isolation is another problem, especially if you don't have many contacts yet. Cultural differences, such as the directness of the French compared to German restraint, can also lead to misunderstandings.
There are many ways to make contacts in Lille. Look for German or international groups on Meetup or Facebook. Take language courses or volunteer to meet locals. Sports clubs or cultural events are also a good way to find new friends. Don't be afraid to approach other expats – they often understand your situation best.
Since there are currently no English-speaking psychologists in Lille, online counseling is a good alternative. You can conveniently speak to a psychologist in your native language from home. When choosing a psychologist, look for one who has experience with expats and understands your situation. Also, find out about costs and possible insurance benefits.
Culture shock is normal and affects almost every expat. Accept that it takes time to adjust to a new culture. Be open to new experiences, but also allow yourself to maintain your German traditions. Try to understand French culture, but don't lose yourself in the process. If you feel overwhelmed, seek support from a psychologist or in an expat group.
Homesickness is a sign that you miss your roots. Talk to your family and friends at home, but also try to feel comfortable in Lille. Make your home cozy, cook German dishes and discover the beautiful sides of Lille. Visit museums, parks and cafes to connect with the city. Also plan regular visits to your home country if possible.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings and social isolation. Take a French course to improve your language skills. Use online translators or apps to cope better in everyday life. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something. If you feel overwhelmed, seek psychological support to deal with your feelings.
Germans often perceive French people as more direct and confrontational, while French people perceive Germans as too reserved and unspontaneous. Try to understand the different communication styles and adapt. Be open to compromise and try to clear up misunderstandings. Talk openly about your feelings, but be careful to formulate your criticism constructively. Humor can help relieve tension.
