Psychologist & Consultant

It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in Las Palmas. I understand what it feels like to be far from home. Life as an expat holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and that feeling of straddling two worlds – it can all be quite nerve-wracking. Especially as the sun sets and the city lights come on, homesickness can become overwhelming, leaving you feeling uprooted. Please know that you're not alone.

As an online psychologist, I understand the unique difficulties that await you as an English speaker abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep popping up in everyday life, and that feeling of loss of identity that's so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how exhausting that can be.

My goal here is to show you both local options in Las Palmas that can help you, and to introduce you to my online consulting services. These are specifically designed to support you as an English speaker abroad – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can support you with advice and assistance.

    I am Sally Schulze

I often hear the question: Sally, do you also take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage to do this by paying attention to myself. The following applies to me: Practise what you preach. So you will not only find me at MentalStark, in TED Talks or when podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. This is how I recharge my batteries and then get started again.

Online Counseling for English Speakers Abroad

As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adjust to a new culture – when the Spanish language still sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so foreign.

In my online counseling, we create a safe space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity questions are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Las Palmas, but to lead a fulfilling life.

Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from another cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from English Speakers Abroad

What specific psychological challenges do English speakers in Las Palmas often experience?

Many English speakers in Las Palmas struggle with the transition to the slower, more relaxed pace of life, which can lead to impatience and frustration. The bureaucracy and different ways of working can also be stressful. Social isolation often occurs, especially if language skills are not yet sufficient or building a new circle of friends is difficult. The longing for familiar products and traditions can also play a role.

How can I deal with these specific challenges?

It is important to have realistic expectations of adaptation and to give yourself time. Try to actively integrate into the local culture, e.g. through language courses, participation in local festivals or joining clubs. Seek contact with other English speakers or expats, but avoid staying only in an "English bubble". Plan regular phone calls or visits home to maintain contact with family and friends. And be patient with yourself – it is normal that it takes time until you really feel at home in Las Palmas.

How do I find English-speaking psychological counseling in Las Palmas?

Since it can be difficult to find an English-speaking therapist directly in Las Palmas, online counseling is a good alternative. In addition, the Deutsches Aerzte Zentrum Gran Canaria S.L. can be a contact point. Also ask German clubs or consulates for recommendations. Note that waiting times for an appointment may vary and the costs usually have to be borne yourself, as Spanish health insurance companies often do not cover foreign therapists.

What can I do about culture shock in Las Palmas?

Before you leave, find out thoroughly about Spanish culture and the peculiarities of life in Gran Canaria. Be open to new experiences and try to focus on the positive aspects. Accept that there are differences and don't immediately judge them negatively. Find a mentor or tandem partner who can help you integrate. And don't forget that culture shock is a temporary phase and you will get better at dealing with it over time.

How can I deal with homesickness and isolation in Las Palmas?

Make your home in Las Palmas as cozy and personal as possible, e.g. with photos, books or other familiar objects. Find hobbies or activities that you enjoy and where you can meet new people. Get involved in an English or international community. Take advantage of the diverse opportunities that Las Palmas offers, e.g. beach walks, excursions to the mountains or visits to cultural events. And if homesickness becomes too strong, don't be afraid to seek professional help.

How do language barriers affect my mental health and what resources are available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings and social isolation. They can impair self-esteem and increase the feeling of not belonging. It is therefore important to actively work on your language skills, e.g. through courses, apps or language tandems. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and speak as much Spanish as possible. Use online translation tools to communicate in difficult situations. And seek support from other English speakers or expats who can help you with advice and assistance.

What are the most common misunderstandings between English speakers and Spaniards and how can I deal with them?

English speakers are often perceived as direct, efficient and punctual, while Spaniards are considered more spontaneous, flexible and relaxed. This can lead to misunderstandings in communication and in dealing with each other. It is important to be aware of these differences and to understand the other person's perspective. Try to adapt to the Spanish culture without denying your own values. Be patient, tolerant and humorous. And don't be afraid to ask if you don't understand something.
