Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in kiew. I understand what it feels like to be far from home. Expat life holds so many amazing experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and that feeling of having one foot in two worlds – it can all be incredibly stressful. Especially given the current situation in Kyiv, the uncertainty and concern for the future can add an extra layer of burden. Please know that you're not alone.
As an Online Psychologist, I understand the unique difficulties that await you as an expat, particularly in a city like Kyiv. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the deeper fears and worries that are amplified by the current situation. The uncertainty, the constant adaptation, and the feeling of powerlessness can be very draining. I know how exhausting that can be.
My goal here is to show you both local resources in Kyiv that can help you and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an expat – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who truly understands your situation and can offer advice and support.
I often hear the question: Sally, do you take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I'm passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I manage to do this by taking care of myself. Here, for me, it applies: Practise what you preach. So you'll find me not only at MentalStark, in TED-Talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right I enjoy the sun and the fresh sea wind. That's how I recharge my batteries and then get started again at full speed.
As a licensed Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as an expat in Kyiv deserve special attention and understanding, because living in the current situation brings unique challenges.
For in-person appointments in Kyiv, there is the following English-speaking psychologist who can assist you with professional support:
Lesya Kutsenko
Psychoanalyst (German-speaking)
Counseling in Ukrainian, English, German and Russian
Kyiv, Ukraine
As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adjust to a new culture and cope with the current situation – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and the news is frightening.
In my online counseling, we create a safe space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity questions concern you, or the worry about your safety weighs on you – together we will find ways in which you can not only survive in Kyiv, but still lead a fulfilling life despite everything.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and stand together as a couple in the current situation.
The 20-minute introductory meeting with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are also welcome to make appointments by e-mail. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together how you can not only survive in Kyiv, but really arrive.

Expats in Kyiv often face a double challenge: adapting to a new culture and dealing with the uncertainties of the current situation. This can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation. Concern for friends and family in Ukraine or back home can also be very stressful.
It is perfectly normal to have anxieties and concerns in the current situation. It is important not to be overwhelmed by the news, but to take conscious breaks and focus on what you can influence. Talk openly about your feelings, seek support from friends, family, or psychological counseling. Relaxation exercises and mindfulness can also help you to calm down.
In addition to online counseling with me, in Kyiv you can contact Lesya Kutsenko, who also offers psychoanalytic counseling in English. As the situation on the ground can change quickly, it is advisable to find out about the current options in advance. Online counseling offers a flexible and location-independent alternative.
Even though Kyiv has many similarities to Western countries, there are cultural differences that can lead to culture shock. Learn about Ukrainian culture, be open to new experiences, and seek contact with locals. It is also important to realize that it takes time to get used to a new culture.
Homesickness and isolation are common feelings among expats. Try to build a social network by joining English-speaking or international groups. Maintain contact with your family and friends back home, but also be open to new friendships in Kyiv. Do something you enjoy and explore the city. Psychological counseling can also help you deal with these feelings.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and social isolation. Use language courses to improve your language skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help and be patient with yourself. Online translation tools can be helpful in everyday life. If the language barrier becomes a burden, psychological counseling in your native language can be a great relief.
There are some cultural differences between Westerners and Ukrainians. Ukrainians are often more hospitable and direct than Westerners. Westerners often value punctuality and order, while Ukrainians can be more flexible. Be open to these differences and try to understand them. Discuss misunderstandings openly and be prepared to adapt. Respectful communication is key to a good relationship.
