Psychologist & Counselor

It’s wonderful that you’ve found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in Houston. I understand how it feels to be far from home. Expat life holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and that feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of that can really take a toll. Especially when the Texas sun sets and the silence settles in, homesickness can become overwhelming, and the feeling of being uprooted can arise. You're not alone in this.

As an online psychologist, I understand the very particular difficulties that you as an expatriate face. It’s often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep popping up when queuing for a barbecue or trying to say "Howdy" correctly, and that feeling of identity loss that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how exhausting that can be.

My goal here is to show you both local resources in Houston that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an expatriate – no matter where you are and what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.

    I am Sally Schulze

I keep hearing the question: Sally, do you also take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage to do this by taking care of myself. The following applies to me: Practice what you preach. So you can find me not only at MentalStark, in TED talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then get back to full speed.

Online Counseling for Expatriates

As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adjust to a new culture – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so alien.

In my online counseling, we create a safe space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues concern you, or homesickness weighs you down – together we will find ways for you not only to survive in Houston, but to lead a fulfilling life.

Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Expatriates in Houston

What specific psychological challenges do expatriates face in Houston?

Many expatriates in Houston struggle with feelings of displacement, adjusting to Texan culture, and homesickness. The oil industry and other specific job markets can create additional pressure. Together, we can develop strategies to address these challenges, preserve your identity, and integrate the positive aspects of living in Houston.

How can I find English-speaking psychological counseling in Houston?

I have listed some local English-speaking psychologists in Houston on this page. In addition, I offer my online counseling, which provides you with a flexible and location-independent way to receive support in your native language. Waiting times for an appointment may vary, but I try to offer you appointments promptly. The costs for psychological counseling vary depending on the provider and insurance. Feel free to contact me for more information about my fees and possible billing options.

How can I cope with culture shock in Houston?

Culture shock is a normal reaction to a new environment. In Houston, it can manifest itself in the unfamiliar heat, the different eating habits, or the casual tone. In psychological counseling, we can develop strategies to deal with these differences, adjust your expectations, and focus on the positive aspects of Texan culture. Remember that it takes time to adjust, and be patient with yourself.

What can I do about homesickness and isolation in Houston?

Homesickness and isolation are common feelings for expats. To counteract this, I recommend actively making social contacts, looking for German or international groups in Houston, and getting involved in local activities. For example, visit the German-American Cultural Center, take a line dancing class, or explore the variety of Houston restaurants. Regular conversations with family and friends back home can also help maintain the connection to your homeland. Together, we can develop strategies that work best for you.

How do language barriers affect my mental health?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and feelings of isolation. It is important not to be discouraged and to continue working on your language skills. Use language courses, apps, or tandem partners to improve your English. In the meantime, psychological counseling in your native language can be a valuable support to express your feelings and develop strategies for dealing with language barriers.

What are the biggest differences between Germans and Texans and how do I deal with them?

Germans and Texans differ in many aspects, from communication styles to social norms. Texans are often very open and friendly, while Germans can be more reserved. In conflict situations, Germans often prefer a direct confrontation, while Texans tend to choose a harmonious approach. To avoid misunderstandings, it is important to be aware of these differences and adjust your communication accordingly. Be open to new experiences, ask questions, and try to understand Texan culture. With patience and empathy, you can build bridges and establish positive relationships.
