Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in Helsinki. I understand what it's like to be far from home. Expat life brings so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The long winter nights, adapting to Finnish culture, and the distance from family and friends – all of this can really take a toll. Especially during "kaamos," the polar night, the feeling of isolation can become overwhelming. You are not alone.
As an Online Psychologist, I understand the unique challenges that await you as an expat abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep popping up in everyday life and that feeling of loss of identity that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how exhausting that can be, especially when you're trying to show "sisu," the Finnish perseverance.
My goal here is to show you both local resources in Helsinki that can help you, as well as to introduce you to my Online Counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an expat – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.
I keep hearing the question: Sally, do you take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I succeed in this by taking care of myself. The following applies to me here: Practise what you preach. So you will find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks or when podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then get started again at full speed.
As a licensed Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as an expat deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.
For on-site appointments in Helsinki, there is an English-speaking psychologist who can assist you with professional support:
Gudrun Wenzel
Psychologist (English-speaking)
Lönnrotinkatu 25 A
Helsinki, Finland
As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adapt to a new culture – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and you sometimes can't even explain why you feel so alien, especially during the long, dark winters.
In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways how you can not only survive in Helsinki, but lead a fulfilling life.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my Couples Counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory meeting with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are also welcome to make appointments by email. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together how you can not only survive in Helsinki, but really arrive.

In Helsinki, the long, dark winter months can lead to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Adapting to Finnish culture, often perceived as reserved, can also lead to social isolation and loneliness. The high cost of living and the search for accommodation can also cause stress.
It is important to take the symptoms seriously and seek professional help if they are affecting your life. Light therapy can be very effective. Try to get as much daylight as possible, even when it's cloudy. Regular exercise, a balanced diet and social contacts are also important. Also consider taking vitamin D supplements, as a deficiency is common.

Be patient with yourself and allow yourself time to adjust. Find out about Finnish culture and try to understand and accept the differences. Get in touch with other expats and people in Helsinki to exchange ideas and find support. Try to actively participate in Finnish life, e.g. through language courses or cultural events.
Maintain contact with your family and friends back home, but avoid dwelling too much in the past. Find hobbies and interests that you enjoy and that help you make new contacts. There are many expat groups and associations in Helsinki that offer regular meetings and activities. Also take advantage of the numerous opportunities Helsinki offers for outdoor activities, such as walks in the forest or ice skating in winter.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, isolation and a feeling of helplessness. It is important to actively speak your native language to maintain your language skills and exchange ideas with others. At the same time, you should try to learn Finnish in order to better integrate into Helsinki and participate in social life. There are numerous language courses and language tandems that can help you with this. Also, don't hesitate to seek professional help if you feel overwhelmed.
Expats often perceive Finns as reserved and taciturn, while Finns may perceive expats as direct and pushy. It is important to respect cultural differences and be aware that communication can take place differently. Try to recognize indirect signals and adapt your communication. Be patient and give the locals time to open up. Avoid judging too quickly and try to understand the Finnish perspective. A good tip is to get to know the Finnish sauna culture and go to the sauna together with Finns - this can create a relaxed atmosphere and help to break down barriers.
