Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
It’s wonderful that you’ve found your way to our page for psychological support in Hamburg. I understand what it feels like to be far from home. Life as an expat holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be a rollercoaster of emotions. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of finding your way in a new culture – even if Hamburg is very German, it is still different from your home – and that feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of that can really take a toll. Especially when the silence sets in, homesickness can become overwhelming and the feeling of being uprooted can arise. You are not alone in this.
As an online psychologist, I understand the very specific difficulties that await you as a German abroad (or someone who has moved to a new city). It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences (e.g. compared to North Germans if you come from Southern Germany) or language barriers (even if German is your mother tongue, dialects or the "Hamburg slang" can be a challenge). It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep popping up in everyday life, and that feeling of identity loss that's so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how exhausting that can be.
My goal here is to show you both local resources in Hamburg that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as a German in "abroad" (or in a new, unfamiliar environment) – no matter where you are right now and what challenges you are facing. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.
I keep hearing the question: Sally, do you also take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I manage to do this by taking care of myself. The following applies to me here: Practise what you preach. So you will not only find me at MentalStark, in TED talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then start all over again.
As a licensed Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as a German abroad or as someone who has moved to Hamburg deserve special attention and understanding, because life between "home" and a new environment brings unique challenges.

As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adapt to a new culture or environment – when the language sounds familiar, but the social codes are different and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so foreign.
In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity questions occupy you, or homesickness burdens you – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Hamburg, but to lead a fulfilling life.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background or a different region of Germany – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory meeting with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are also welcome to make appointments by e-mail. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together for you to not only survive in Hamburg, but to really arrive.

Many expats in Hamburg struggle with a feeling of uprootedness, even if they come from Germany. The job market can be competitive, the search for accommodation frustrating, and the North German mentality takes some getting used to. Loneliness, stress, and adjusting to new dialects and social customs are common themes in psychological counseling.
Loneliness is a common problem. To counteract this, it is important to take action. Seek contact with others through clubs, sports groups, language courses or neighborhood initiatives. Hamburg has many open and welcoming places. Online platforms can also help you find like-minded people. Consider what interests you have and specifically look for groups that share these. And don't be afraid to go out alone – a visit to Miniatur Wunderland or a walk on the Elbe can work wonders!
There are several ways to find psychological counseling in Hamburg. You can contact resident psychologists (see above) or use online counseling. Waiting times for a therapy place can be long, so it is advisable to make appointments early. The costs for psychological counseling vary. Private health insurance usually covers the costs, while those with statutory insurance must meet certain requirements to receive reimbursement. Find out about this in advance from your health insurance company. Online counseling often offers a more flexible and faster alternative.
There are also cultural differences within Germany. Moving from Bavaria to Hamburg can trigger a "culture shock" just as much as moving from Germany to another country. Accept that it takes time to get used to the new environment. Be open to new experiences, but also allow yourself to maintain your "old" culture. Seek exchange with other expats so you don't feel alone. And take time to discover Hamburg with its many facets – from the Reeperbahn to the Elbe suburbs.
Homesickness is a normal feeling, especially in the first time after moving. Try to find a balance between the new and the old home. Keep in touch with family and friends, maintain traditions, and create a new home for yourself in Hamburg. This can mean that you set up a cozy home, cook your favorite recipes, or find places that remind you of your home. And don't forget: Hamburg is a beautiful city that has a lot to offer. Focus on the positive aspects and discover the city with all its possibilities.
Even if you speak German, dialects and Hamburg slang can be a challenge and lead to misunderstandings. This can be frustrating and negatively affect your mental health. Don't be afraid to ask if you don't understand something. There are also language courses and tandem programs that can help you better understand the dialect. And remember: Most Hamburgers are open and helpful and won't mind if you ask.
Typical conflicts often arise from different communication styles (direct vs. indirect), different values (e.g. work-life balance) or different understandings of politeness. To prevent conflicts, it is important to be aware that there are different perspectives. Try to understand the other person's motives and communicate openly and respectfully. Be willing to compromise and, in case of doubt, seek professional support, e.g. through mediation.
