Psychologist & Counselor

It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for psychological counseling in Freiburg. I understand what it feels like to be far from home or, as a German abroad, to face the challenges of a new environment. Living in Freiburg, nestled in the beautiful Black Forest, can offer so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for the familiar, the challenge of finding your way in a new city and perhaps even a new country – all of this can really test your nerves. Especially when the silence sets in, homesickness can become overwhelming, and you may feel uprooted. You are not alone.

As an online psychologist, I understand the very specific difficulties that await you as a German abroad or someone who has moved to Freiburg. It's often not just the obvious things like finding an apartment or the Baden dialect. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep cropping up in everyday life, and that feeling of loss of identity that is so difficult to grasp and put into words. I know how exhausting that can be.

My goal here is to show you both local resources in Freiburg that can help you and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as a German abroad or someone who has moved here – no matter where you are right now and what challenges you are facing. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.

    I am Sally Schulze

I often hear the question: Sally, do you also take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage to do this by taking care of myself. Here, I apply the motto: Practice what you preach. So you will not only find me at MentalStark, in TED Talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. This is how I recharge my batteries and then get back to work full force.

Online Counseling for Germans Abroad and New Residents

As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adapt to a new city or culture – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and you sometimes can't even explain why you feel so alien.

In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity questions are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Freiburg, but to lead a fulfilling life.

Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from another cultural background or another region of Germany – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from Germans Abroad and New Residents in Freiburg

What psychological challenges do expats and new residents in Freiburg often face?

Many expats and new residents in Freiburg experience challenges such as difficulties adjusting to the local culture and customs, especially the Baden mentality. Finding an apartment, the often-tense situation on the job market and social isolation can also be a burden. Homesickness for the old homeland and the loss of the usual social network are also common themes.

How can I deal with the feeling of loneliness and isolation in Freiburg?

Loneliness is a common feeling when you are new to a city. To counteract this, try to actively make contacts. Freiburg offers numerous opportunities to meet new people, such as language courses, sports clubs, expat groups or cultural events. Voluntary work can also be a good way to make social contacts. Don't be afraid to approach others and be open to new friendships.

How do I find psychological counseling in English in Freiburg?

If you are looking for psychological counseling in English in Freiburg, there are various contact points. You can contact the psychologists in Freiburg mentioned here (Farid Qurbani, Dr. Sonja Wahl and Dr. Daniel Kopp). Another option is online counseling, which offers the advantage that you can use it conveniently from home. Waiting times for a therapy spot can vary, so it is recommended to make appointments early. The costs for psychological counseling are usually covered by health insurance companies if there is a corresponding diagnosis. It is best to check with your health insurance company in advance.

How do I deal with culture shock in Freiburg?

Culture shock is a normal reaction to a new environment. To overcome it, it is important to take time to get to know and adapt to the new culture. Try to be open to new experiences and focus on the positive aspects of Freiburg. At the same time, it is important to maintain the connection to the old homeland, for example through regular phone calls with family and friends or by maintaining traditions. If the symptoms of culture shock persist or are very stressful, psychological counseling can be helpful.

How can I combat homesickness and isolation in Freiburg? What local activities and groups are there that promote my well-being?

Homesickness and isolation can be combated through various strategies. Actively participate in social life in Freiburg, for example by attending local events, joining a club or volunteering. There are also special groups for expats and new residents where you can exchange ideas with like-minded people. Freiburg also offers numerous leisure activities, such as hikes in the Black Forest, visits to museums and theaters, or a stroll through the old town. Sporting activities can also help to reduce stress and increase well-being.

How can language barriers affect my mental health, and what resources are available to overcome them?

Language barriers can lead to feelings of frustration, isolation, and helplessness. They can make communication in everyday life more difficult and create a feeling of not being properly understood. To overcome language barriers, it is recommended to take a language course or enter into a language tandem partnership. Apps and online resources can also help with language learning. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and actively speak, even if it's difficult at first. Over time, you will become more confident and self-assured in dealing with the German language.

What are the most common misunderstandings and challenges between Germans from different regions (e.g. Northern and Southern Germany), and how can I deal with them?

Even within Germany, there are cultural differences that can lead to misunderstandings. For example, communication styles and customs differ in Northern and Southern Germany. To avoid misunderstandings, it is important to be aware of your own cultural background and to be open to other perspectives. Try to understand the background of other people's behavior and don't take everything personally. If conflicts arise, address them openly and respectfully and try to find a solution together. Humor can also help to reduce tensions and build bridges.
