Psychologist & Counselor

It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for psychological support in Düsseldorf. I understand what it feels like to live in a new city, especially when that city isn't your homeland. Life as an expat, or as someone with German roots who grew up elsewhere, brings so many exciting opportunities, but it can also be quite challenging. Settling into a new job, searching for the right apartment in districts like Golzheim or Pempelfort, and building a new social network – all of this can be quite stressful. And especially when the lights of the Rheinkirmes fade, a feeling of emptiness can spread. Please know that you are not alone.

As an online psychologist, I understand the very specific difficulties that await you in Düsseldorf. It's often not just the obvious things like the Düsseldorf Carnival, which is celebrated differently than you might be used to, or the local dialect, "Düsseldorfer Platt." It's the subtle differences in how people interact, the unspoken rules that keep cropping up in everyday life, and that feeling of not quite belonging, which is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be.

My goal is to show you both local resources in Düsseldorf that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an expat or German in Düsseldorf – no matter where you are and what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and is there to help you with advice and support.

    I am Sally Schulze

I keep hearing the question: Sally, do you ever take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert, and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage to do this by taking care of myself. For me, it's about practicing what I preach. So you'll find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks, or podcasting. No. You'll also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake, or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge and then get back into full swing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Germans in Düsseldorf

What are the specific psychological challenges for expats and Germans in Düsseldorf?

In Düsseldorf, many expats and Germans experience challenges related to finding accommodation, starting a career, and building social contacts. The housing situation can be tense, the local labor market often has specific requirements, and integration into Düsseldorf society requires openness and patience. Often, problems also arise due to the Carnival or the Rhenish mentality.

How can I deal with these challenges?

It is important to set realistic goals and not overwhelm yourself. Use networks and communities to make contacts and exchange ideas. Get involved in local clubs or groups to meet new people. Be open to the Düsseldorf culture and try to understand the local mentality. And don't be afraid to seek professional psychological counseling if you feel overwhelmed.

How do I find psychological counseling in Düsseldorf?

You can contact local psychologists and psychological counseling centers. A good starting point is the Therapie.de website to get an initial overview. It is also possible to use online counseling, which is particularly flexible and location-independent. Make sure that the counselor has the appropriate qualifications and experience in working with expats and Germans. Waiting times for an appointment can vary, so it is advisable to make an appointment early. The costs for psychological counseling are usually not covered by health insurance, unless it is a recognized psychotherapy.

How do I deal with culture shock in Düsseldorf?

Culture shock is a normal reaction to a new environment. It is important to take time to adjust to the new culture and not isolate yourself. Try to get to know the Düsseldorf culture and actively engage with it. Seek contact with locals and exchange ideas with other expats. If you feel overwhelmed, psychological counseling can help you cope with culture shock.

What can I do about homesickness and isolation in Düsseldorf?

Homesickness and isolation are common feelings, especially in the early days. Try to stay in contact with your family and friends back home, but don't isolate yourself from your new environment. Get involved in local groups and clubs to make new contacts. Attend cultural events and get to know the Düsseldorf culture. If feelings of homesickness and isolation persist, psychological counseling can help you cope with them.

How do language barriers affect my mental health and what support is available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and social isolation. It is important to learn the German language to better find your way around Düsseldorf. Use language courses and language tandems to improve your language skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something. There are also psychological counseling services in various languages that can help you deal with the challenges.

What are the most common difficulties between Germans and Rhinelanders and how can I deal with them?

Misunderstandings often arise due to different communication styles and mentalities. Rhinelanders are often considered more open and relaxed, while Germans are sometimes perceived as more direct and matter-of-fact. Try to understand the differences and adapt to them. Be open to the Rhenish mentality and take things with humor. If conflicts arise, try to communicate calmly and respectfully and understand the other person's perspective.
