Psychologist & Consultant

We're so glad you've found your way to our page for psychological support in Dortmund. We understand what it's like to be far from home. Life as an expat holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of finding your feet in a new culture, and that feeling of straddling two worlds – all of this can really take its toll. Even if you've only moved to Dortmund from another part of Germany, the differences can be surprising and challenging. Please know that you are not alone.

As an online psychologist, I understand the very specific difficulties that await you as a German abroad or someone who has relocated to Dortmund. It's often not just the obvious things like the local culture or the dialect. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep cropping up in everyday life, and that feeling of loss of identity that is so difficult to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be.

My goal here is to show you both local resources in Dortmund that can help you, as well as to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as a German abroad or a new Dortmunder – no matter where you are right now and what challenges you are facing. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.

    I am Sally Schulze

I keep hearing the question: Sally, do you take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I'm passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage to do this by taking care of myself. The following applies to me: Practise what you preach. So you won't just find me at MentalStark, in TED Talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture on the right here, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. This is how I recharge my batteries and then get back to work.

Online Counseling for Germans Abroad

As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adapt to a new culture or a new city – when the language sounds foreign (or the dialect is unfamiliar), the social codes are different, and you sometimes can't even explain why you feel so foreign.

In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Dortmund, but to lead a fulfilling life.

Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background or a different region of Germany – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from Germans Abroad or in Dortmund

What are the most common psychological challenges for expats and new residents in Dortmund?

Many expats and new residents in Dortmund experience similar challenges: difficulties adjusting to the local culture and mentality, difficulties finding a job (especially if German is not the native language), finding accommodation in a tight market, social isolation and a feeling of being uprooted. The famous "Ruhrpott charm" can also take some getting used to at first.

How can I deal with specific challenges in Dortmund?

For job searching: Use networks in Dortmund, take language courses, adapt applications to local customs. For finding an apartment: Contact local neighborhood groups, be patient. Against social isolation: Join Dortmund clubs (e.g. sports clubs, choirs), visit local events in Westfalenpark or at Phoenix See, volunteer.

How do I find psychological counseling in Dortmund?

You can contact the psychologists in Dortmund mentioned above (Dipl.-Psych. Tanja Pelzer and Dipl.-Psych. Tanya Dolis). It is advisable to make appointments early, as waiting times are possible. Alternatively, I offer my online counseling, which is flexible and location-independent. The costs for psychological counseling are usually covered by health insurance companies if there is a diagnosed mental illness. Otherwise, they are self-payment services.

How do I deal with culture shock in Dortmund?

Culture shock is normal. Allow yourself to be sad and confused. Seek contact with other expats or new residents who have had similar experiences. Get to know the local culture, but don't lose yourself. Preserve your own identity. Explore Dortmund: Visit the German Football Museum, the Zeche Zollern, the Dortmunder U.

How can I deal with homesickness and isolation in Dortmund?

Homesickness is a sign that you are missing something. Try to find a balance between building a new life in Dortmund and maintaining your roots. Call family and friends regularly, cook dishes from your homeland, listen to your favorite music. Find a "surrogate family" in Dortmund – people who support and understand you.

How do language barriers affect mental health and what resources are available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, social isolation, and a feeling of helplessness. Use language courses, language tandems, and apps to improve your German skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something. There are many contact points for migrants and expats in Dortmund that offer support (e.g. the Foreigners' Registration Office, migration counseling centers).

What are the most common difficulties between people from different regions of Germany and how can they be dealt with?

Different mentalities, dialects and communication styles can lead to misunderstandings. People from northern Germany are often more direct than people from southern Germany. The Ruhr area is known for its direct and honest manner. Be open and tolerant towards other cultures and try to understand the other person's perspective. Humor can help to reduce tension.
