Psychologist & Consultant

It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for psychological support in The Hague, designed specifically for English-speakers. I understand what it's like to be far from home. Life as an expat offers so many amazing experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of adapting to a new culture, and that feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of that can really take its toll. Especially when the silence sets in, perhaps as you stand by the Binnenhof or on the beach at Scheveningen, the homesickness can become overwhelming, and you might feel uprooted. You are not alone.

As an Online Psychologist, I understand the very specific difficulties that await you as an English-speaker abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep cropping up in everyday life, and that feeling of identity loss that is so difficult to grasp and put into words. Perhaps you feel lost between the modern buildings and historical gabled houses. I know how exhausting that can be.

My goal here is to show you both local resources in The Hague that can help you, and to introduce you to my Online Counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an English-speaker abroad – no matter where you are right now and what challenges you are facing. Because sometimes you just need someone who truly understands your situation and can support you with advice and action.

  • I am Sally Schulze

    I am Sally Schulze

I often hear the question: Sally, do you ever take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I'm passionate about women's health. But I'm not burning out.

I manage to do that by taking care of myself. Here, I apply "Practise what you preach." So you'll find me not only at MentalStark, in TED-Talks or podcasting. No. You'll also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture on the right here, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then get back to it with full energy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from English-speakers Abroad

What specific psychological challenges do English-speakers in The Hague often experience?

Many English-speakers in The Hague report difficulties finding accommodation, especially in the tight housing market. Competition is high, and housing prices can be daunting. Integration into the Dutch labor market can also be challenging, as the requirements and expectations may differ from those at home. Social isolation is another common problem, especially when it is difficult to make new friends or maintain existing relationships with family and friends back home. Cultural differences, such as the direct communication style of the Dutch, can also lead to misunderstandings and conflicts.

How can I deal with the feeling of cultural displacement in The Hague?

The feeling of standing between two cultures is normal. Try to nurture both your English-speaking identity and engage with Dutch culture. Visit English-speaking events and clubs in The Hague, cook familiar meals, but also be open to Dutch traditions such as Koningsdag or Sinterklaas. Find a middle ground that allows you to feel connected to your homeland and at home in The Hague. Psychological counseling can help you find and strengthen your identity in this new context.

How do I find psychological counseling in English in The Hague?

One option is Kühler & Partners International Mental Health practice in The Hague. Alternatively, online counseling offers a flexible option to connect with an English-speaking psychologist without being tied to a specific location. Contact your general practitioner or health insurance company for information on local therapists and possible reimbursements. Waiting times for an appointment may vary, so it is advisable to look for a therapist early. The costs of psychological counseling can vary depending on the therapist and insurance. Find out in advance about the respective rates and reimbursement options.

How can I cope with culture shock in The Hague?

Culture shock is a normal reaction to a new environment. Be patient with yourself and allow yourself time to adjust. Learn about Dutch culture and try to understand and accept the differences. Seek contact with other English-speakers or expats who have had similar experiences. Get involved in local activities and clubs to meet new people and integrate into the community. If you feel overwhelmed, don't hesitate to seek professional help.

How can I combat loneliness and isolation in The Hague?

Loneliness is a common challenge for expats. Actively seek contact with other people. Join English-speaking or international clubs and organizations in The Hague. Take language courses or volunteer. Use online platforms and social media to connect with other expats. Do activities that you enjoy and be open to new friendships. If the loneliness persists and affects your well-being, psychological counseling can be a valuable support.

How do language barriers affect my mental health in The Hague and what resources are available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and social isolation. Try to learn Dutch to be able to communicate better. Use translation apps and online resources to find your way around everyday life. Be open and honest about your language difficulties and ask for help if you don't understand something. Don't hesitate to speak in your native language if you feel more comfortable. If language barriers are affecting your mental health, psychological counseling in your native language can be a great relief.

What are the most common conflicts between English-speakers and Dutch people and how can they be dealt with?

A common point of conflict is the different communication styles. Dutch people are often more direct and open than English-speakers, which can sometimes be perceived as rude or hurtful. Conversely, Dutch people may interpret English-speaking restraint and indirect communication as insincere or unclear. Try to understand the cultural differences and adapt your communication accordingly. Be open and honest in your communication, but also pay attention to the tone and how you say something. If misunderstandings arise, address them openly and try to find a common solution. Humor can also help relieve tension. Stay true to yourself, but also be willing to engage with Dutch culture.
