Psychologist & Counselor

It’s wonderful that you’ve found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in Burgas. I understand what it feels like to be far from home. Expat life holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and the feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of that can really test your nerves. Especially when you're sitting by the Burgas Sea Garden in the evening, watching the sunset, homesickness can become overwhelming, and you might feel uprooted. Please know that you are not alone.

As an online psychologist, I understand the very particular difficulties that await you as an English speaker abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the little misunderstandings while shopping at the market, that pop up again and again in everyday life, and that feeling of loss of identity that is so difficult to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be.

My goal here is to show you both local resources in Burgas that can help you, as well as to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an English speaker abroad – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.

    I am Sally Schulze

I always get asked the question: Sally, do you take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage to do that by taking care of myself. The following applies to me here: Practise what you preach. So you will find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then get back to work at full speed.

My Professional Background

As a licensed psychological psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.

A trusting relationship is particularly important to me in our collaboration. Your experiences as an English speaker abroad deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.

English-Speaking Psychologists in Burgas

It is understandable that you are looking for English-speaking psychological counseling in Burgas. The reality is that there are very few options locally. Nevertheless, in order to help you, I have done some research and would like to give you the following information:

Currently (as of October 2024) there are **no** resident English-speaking psychologists directly in Burgas. But that doesn't mean you can't find support!

One possible option is to look for psychologists in larger cities in Bulgaria who offer online counseling. Specifically ask if they speak English. Another option is the online counseling that I offer myself.

Online Counseling for English Speakers Abroad

As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adapt to a new culture – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so foreign.

In my online counseling, we create a protected space in which you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways in which you can not only survive in Burgas, but lead a fulfilling life.

Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support in building cultural bridges and finding your way back to each other.

Your Appointment with the Online Psychologist

The 20-minute introductory meeting with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are also welcome to make appointments by email. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together in which you can not only survive in Burgas, but really arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from English Speakers Abroad

What specific psychological challenges do English speakers in Burgas often experience?

English speakers in Burgas may face challenges such as navigating the Bulgarian job market (lower wages, different work culture), finding accommodation (different standards, language barriers), social isolation (few English-speaking contacts), and cultural differences (different values, communication styles). These factors can lead to stress, uncertainty, and adjustment difficulties.

What coping strategies help with these challenges?

It is important to actively build a social network (e.g., through expat groups, language courses), learn about Bulgarian customs, have realistic expectations of the job market, seek professional support if needed, and maintain English traditions and hobbies to feel connected to home.

How do I find psychological counseling in Burgas?

Since there are very few English-speaking psychologists directly in Burgas, online options are a good alternative. Search the internet for "English-speaking psychologist online" and pay attention to qualifications and specializations. Also, check with your health insurance company to see if online counseling is covered. Waiting times may vary, so it is advisable to make appointments early.

How do I deal with culture shock in Burgas?

Culture shock is normal. Try to be open to new things, but also allow yourself to be sad about losses. Learn about Bulgarian culture, learn the language, and seek contact with locals and other expats. If necessary, psychological counseling can help you understand your own feelings and develop strategies for adapting.

What can I do about homesickness and isolation in Burgas?

Regular contact with family and friends back home is important. Find hobbies and activities in Burgas that you enjoy and join local groups (e.g., sports clubs, language clubs). Volunteer to make new contacts. If the feelings get out of hand, psychological counseling can help you cope with homesickness and isolation.

How do language barriers affect mental health and what resources are available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and social isolation. Use language courses, apps, and tandem partners to improve your language skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help and use translation programs. If the language barriers become too burdensome, psychological counseling in your native language can help you cope with the situation.

How does German and Bulgarian behavior differ and how can I deal with it?

English speakers often value directness and punctuality, while Bulgarians tend to communicate more indirectly and are more flexible with time. In dealing with each other, it is important to be patient, accept cultural differences and address misunderstandings openly. Try to adapt to Bulgarian customs without denying your own values. If conflicts arise, a neutral third person (e.g. an intercultural coach or a psychologist) can help defuse the situation.
