Psychologist & Counselor

It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in Bucharest. I truly understand what it feels like to be far from home. Expat life offers so many incredible experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and that feeling of straddling two worlds – it can all take a toll. Especially when you're sitting in your apartment in the evening, watching the lights of Calea Victoriei twinkle, homesickness can be overwhelming, leaving you feeling uprooted. Please know that you are not alone.

As an online psychologist, I understand the very specific challenges that await you as an English-speaker abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that repeatedly pop up in everyday life, for example, when shopping at Piata Obor or communicating with Romanian colleagues, and that feeling of loss of identity that is so difficult to grasp and put into words. I know how exhausting that can be.

My goal here is to show you both local options in Bucharest that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an English-speaker abroad – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who truly understands your situation and can support you with advice and assistance.

    I am Sally Schulze

I often hear the question: Sally, do you ever take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert, and entrepreneur, I'm passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage to do this by taking care of myself. Here, I apply: Practice what you preach. So you'll not only find me at MentalStark, in TED-Talks, or podcasting. No. You'll also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake, or snowboarding. In the picture here on the right, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then get back into full swing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for English-Speakers Abroad

What specific psychological challenges do English-speakers in Bucharest often experience?

Many English-speakers in Bucharest experience challenges related to the Romanian job market, which may differ from their home country. Finding suitable housing, social isolation due to language barriers and cultural differences, and difficulties integrating into the local community are also common issues.

How can I cope with these specific challenges?

It is helpful to set realistic expectations for the adaptation process. Engage in local expat groups or English-Romanian associations to build social contacts. Try to learn Romanian to facilitate communication in everyday life. Use online resources to learn about the job market and housing options. If necessary, do not hesitate to seek professional psychological counseling.

Where can I find English-speaking psychological counseling in Bucharest?

In Bucharest, there is the possibility of psychological counseling with Ileana Tănăsescu (English-speaking). Alternatively, many online platforms, such as this page, offer psychological counseling in English. Waiting times for appointments may vary, so it is advisable to inquire early. The costs for psychological counseling also vary. Check whether your health insurance covers part of the costs.

How do I deal with culture shock in Bucharest?

Culture shock is a normal reaction to a new environment. Allow yourself to feel uncomfortable and take time to get to know the city and its culture. Visit local markets like Piata Obor, try traditional Romanian dishes, and explore historical sites like the Palace of the Parliament. Accept that it takes time to adjust and be patient with yourself.

What can I do about homesickness and isolation in Bucharest?

Schedule regular phone calls or video calls with family and friends. Make your apartment cozy and personal to create a sense of home. Get involved in local clubs or groups that match your interests. Attend cultural events and get to know the Romanian culture. Outdoor activities, such as walks in Herăstrău Park, can also help to increase well-being.

How do language barriers affect my mental health, and what resources are available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, isolation, and a feeling of helplessness. Use language courses or apps to improve your Romanian skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something. Online translation tools can be helpful in everyday life. If the language barrier becomes a burden, psychological counseling in your native language can help you deal with these feelings.

What typical conflicts arise between English-speakers and Romanians, and how can I deal with them?

Differences in the directness of communication can lead to misunderstandings. English-speakers often tend to communicate directly and factually, while Romanians may prefer a more indirect and relationship-oriented approach. Patience and intercultural understanding are important. Try to understand the perspective of your counterpart and adjust your communication accordingly. Cultural sensitivity and respect for other traditions help to avoid or constructively resolve conflicts.
