Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
It's wonderful that you've found our page for psychological support in Budapest. I understand how it feels to be far from home. Life as an expat brings so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of finding your way in a new culture – between the historic walls of the Castle District and the vibrant streets of Pest – and that feeling of standing with one foot in two worlds – all of this can really take its toll. Especially when the silence sets in, homesickness can become overwhelming, and you might feel uprooted. Please know that you're not alone in this.
As an Online Psychologist, I understand the unique difficulties that await you as an expat. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep cropping up in everyday life, and that feeling of identity loss that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be.
My goal here is to show you both local resources in Budapest that can help you and to introduce you to my Online Counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an expat – no matter where you are right now and what challenges you are facing. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.
I keep hearing the question: Sally, do you take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I manage to do that by taking care of myself. For me, the motto is: Practise what you preach. So you will not only find me at MentalStark, in TED Talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then get back to work.
As a licensed Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as an expat deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.
For in-person appointments in Budapest, there are several English-speaking options that can provide you with professional support:

As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming adapting to a new culture can be – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so out of place.
In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity questions are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Budapest, but to lead a fulfilling life.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from another culture – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory meeting with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are also welcome to make appointments by e-mail. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together how you can not only survive in Budapest, but really arrive.

In Budapest, many expats experience challenges related to the Hungarian job market, finding accommodation, and social isolation. Cultural differences, especially in communication and social customs, can also be stressful. In addition, there are often language barriers and a feeling of being uprooted far from home.
To deal with the challenges, it is important to actively build a social network, e.g. by participating in expat meetings or language courses. If you have problems in the job market, advice from local career advisors can be helpful. It is advisable to familiarise yourself with Hungarian customs early on and be open to cultural differences. Psychological counseling can help you develop strategies for coping with stress and strengthening your resilience.
One option is the PsyAid psychological counseling center in Budapest. Alternatively, you can use my online counseling. The advantages of online counseling are flexibility and the ability to receive support from anywhere. The costs vary depending on the provider and type of counseling. Some German health insurance companies cover the costs of online counseling, but this should be clarified in advance. Waiting times for an appointment may vary, so it is worth comparing different options.
Culture shock is a normal reaction to a new environment. It helps to consciously take time to adjust, have realistic expectations and actively engage with Hungarian culture, e.g. by learning the language or attending local events. Exchanging experiences with other expats can also be very helpful. Accept that it takes time to settle in.
To counteract homesickness and isolation, it is important to maintain contact with family and friends at home, but also to make new social contacts in Budapest. Find hobbies and activities that you enjoy and get involved in local communities or clubs. Psychological counseling can help you deal with feelings of homesickness and develop strategies for self-care.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings and social isolation, which can negatively affect mental health. It is advisable to attend a language course and actively practice speaking Hungarian. There are also numerous online resources and language tandems that can help you improve your language skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help and use translation apps to facilitate communication.
Germans often value directness and punctuality, while Hungarians tend to prefer a more indirect communication style and are more flexible with time. This can lead to misunderstandings, e.g. when German criticism is perceived as too harsh or Hungarian unpunctuality is interpreted as disrespect. It is important to be aware of cultural differences and be open to compromise. Address misunderstandings openly and try to understand the other person's perspective.
