Psychologist & Counselor

It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for psychological support in Bremen. I understand what it's like to be far from home. Life as an expat offers so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and the feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of this can be incredibly stressful. Especially when the silence sets in, homesickness can become overwhelming, leading to feelings of being uprooted. Please know that you are not alone.

As an Online Psychologist, I understand the unique difficulties that await you as an expat. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that repeatedly surface in everyday life, and that feeling of loss of identity, which is so difficult to grasp and put into words. I know how exhausting that can be.

My goal here is to show you both local resources in Bremen that can help you, as well as introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an expat – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who truly understands your situation and can provide you with advice and support.

    I am Sally Schulze

I often hear the question: Sally, do you also take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert, and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage this by taking care of myself. Here, "practise what you preach" applies to me. So you'll find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks, or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake, or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. This is how I recharge my batteries and then start again with full energy.

Online Counseling for Expats

As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic online psychological counseling. I understand how overwhelming the adjustment to a new culture can be – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so foreign.

In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity questions are occupying you, or homesickness is burdening you – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Bremen, but also lead a fulfilling life.

Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from another cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from Expats

What specific psychological challenges do expats in Bremen often experience?

Many expats in Bremen report challenges in finding jobs, especially if their qualifications don't directly match the German system. Finding accommodation can also be stressful. Social isolation is another common problem, particularly in the early stages. Cultural differences, especially in the direct communication style of people from Bremen, can also be challenging.

How can I deal with the challenges of the Bremen job market?

It is important to adapt your qualifications to local requirements. Networking is crucial – attend industry events, use online platforms, and talk to other expats in Bremen. Have your application documents checked by a local expert and be open to further training that improves your chances.

How do I find psychological counseling in Bremen?

You can contact local psychologists and clinics. Filip Chattington (Kantstraße 60, 28201 Bremen) and Sabine Weber (Hollerallee 14, 28209 Bremen) are good starting points. Alternatively, I offer online counseling that is flexible and location-independent. Waiting times for a therapy appointment can vary, but online services are often available faster. The costs are either covered by health insurance (for therapists with health insurance approval) or must be paid privately. Find out about the respective conditions in advance.

What can I do about culture shock in Bremen?

Find out about Bremen's culture and history in advance. Be open to new experiences, but don't expect everything to feel familiar immediately. Seek contact with locals, but don't neglect your expat contacts either. Accept that it takes time to adjust and be patient with yourself. Typical for Bremen are, for example, the "Four Musicians of Bremen" from the town musicians story, visit the monument and let yourself be inspired by the story!

How can I deal with homesickness and isolation in Bremen?

Regular contact with family and friends back home is important. Find like-minded people in expat clubs or groups in Bremen. Get involved in local clubs or initiatives to make new contacts. Discover the beautiful sides of Bremen – take walks along the Weser river, visit the Schnoor district or enjoy the maritime atmosphere in Bremerhaven.

How do language barriers affect my mental health and what support is available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and social isolation. Take language courses to improve your German skills. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something. Online counseling in your native language can be a great relief to express feelings and thoughts precisely.

What differences are there in behavior between Germans and people from Bremen and how can I deal with them?

People from Bremen are often considered to be more reserved and direct in their communication than Germans from other regions. It can be helpful to get used to this directness and not take it personally. Small talk is less common than in other cultures. Try to understand the local culture and adapt without denying your own values. A visit to the Bremen Freimarkt can help to understand the relaxed nature of the Bremen people.
