Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
We are so glad you've found our page for English-speaking psychological support in Birmingham. I understand how it feels to be far from home. Expat life holds so many wonderful opportunities, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and the feeling of straddling two worlds – all of this can really take a toll. Especially when the grey skies hang over the Bullring and homesickness arises for a sunny Sunday walk in the Black Forest, the feeling of being uprooted can be overwhelming. You are not alone.
As an online psychologist, I understand the unique challenges that await you as a German abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances in small talk at the office, the little misunderstandings when ordering a "pint" at the pub, that keep popping up in everyday life, and that feeling of identity loss that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be.
My goal here is to show you both local resources in Birmingham that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as a German abroad – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.
I often hear the question: Sally, do you take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I succeed in this by taking care of myself. Here, for me, it applies: Practise what you preach. So you'll find me not only at MentalStark, in TED talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake or snowboarding. In the picture here on the right, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then get back to work full throttle.
As a licensed Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as a German abroad deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.
Finding English-speaking psychological support in Birmingham can be a challenge. While the city itself has a vibrant and diverse community, it is not always easy to find professional help in your native language. Especially if you are struggling with homesickness, adjustment difficulties or feelings of isolation, it can be very valuable to express yourself in your own language.
Currently, there are no known English-speaking psychologists practicing directly in Birmingham. However, I would like to encourage you not to give up and to consider alternative ways to get the support you deserve.
As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adjust to a new culture – when the "Brummie" accent is hard to understand, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so foreign.
In my online counseling, we create a safe space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Birmingham, but to lead a fulfilling life.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory meeting with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are also welcome to make appointments by e-mail. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together so that you can not only survive in Birmingham, but really arrive.

In Birmingham, many Germans experience challenges related to the job market, which is often more competitive than in Germany. Difficulties finding accommodation, especially in popular areas like Moseley or Harborne, can also cause stress. Social isolation, amplified by the lack of a strong German network, and cultural differences in dealing with conflicts are other common problems. The "Brummie" accent can be difficult to understand at first, making communication difficult.
It is important to thoroughly inform yourself about British application standards, which may differ from German ones. Networking is crucial to make contacts and discover job opportunities. Do not hesitate to seek help from career advisors or specialized agencies. Focus on your strengths and highlight what sets you apart from other applicants.
Online counseling is an excellent alternative. Many platforms offer English-speaking psychologists who can be reached by video call. This allows you to talk about your feelings and challenges in your native language without relying on local resources. When choosing, pay attention to the qualifications and specializations of the therapist to ensure that he or she understands your needs.
Culture shock is a normal reaction to a new environment. Allow yourself to adapt to the new culture without losing yourself. Seek contact with other expats and Germans in Birmingham to exchange experiences and support each other. Explore the city and its surroundings, visit local events and get to know British culture. Be patient with yourself and remember that it takes time to settle in.
Regular contact with family and friends in Germany is important to maintain the connection to your home country. Find hobbies and activities that you enjoy and join local clubs or groups to meet new people. Visit German events or restaurants in Birmingham to feel at home. Volunteer to find a sense of purpose and integrate into the community.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings and social isolation. Take language courses to improve your English skills. Use online translation tools and apps to facilitate communication. Do not hesitate to ask for help if you do not understand something. Talk openly about your difficulties and seek support from other expats or your employer.
A common point of conflict is the different communication style. Britons often tend to a more indirect approach, while Germans can be more direct. Try to adapt to the British communication style and avoid misunderstandings. Be patient and polite, even if you disagree. Respect British culture and its traditions. Be open to compromises and try to find common ground.
