Psychologist & Consultant

I'm so glad you've found our page for English-speaking psychological support in Lyon. I truly understand what it feels like to be far from home. Expat life holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of finding your feet in a new culture, and that feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of this can really take its toll. Especially when you're sitting by the Rhône in the evening, looking at the city lights, homesickness can become overwhelming, and you might feel uprooted. Please know that you are not alone.

As an online psychologist, I understand the very specific difficulties that await you as an English speaker abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the little misunderstandings that keep cropping up in everyday life, and that feeling of identity loss that's so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be. The search for an apartment in Vieux Lyon, navigating French bureaucracy, and the constant question of whether you're behaving correctly – all of this can be stressful.

My goal here is to show you both local resources in Lyon that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an English speaker abroad – no matter where you are right now and what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who truly understands your situation and can support you with advice and practical help.

    I am Sally Schulze

I always get asked the question: Sally, do you ever take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I manage to do this by taking care of myself. For me, it's about: Practise what you preach. So you can find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then get back to full speed.

My Professional Background

As a licensed Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.

In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as an English speaker abroad deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.

English-Speaking Psychologists in Lyon

Unfortunately, there are currently no English-speaking psychologists in Lyon that I can directly recommend for in-person appointments. The search for a suitable therapist can take time, but it is worth it to get the best possible support.

Here are some resources that can help you with your search:

  • Online Directories: Use online directories for psychologists and psychotherapists in France and filter by "English" as the spoken language.
  • English-Speaking Community in Lyon: Ask in English-speaking clubs or groups in Lyon for recommendations. Often other expats know therapists with whom they have had good experiences.
  • Embassy or Consulate: Your country's embassy or consulate in Lyon may be able to provide you with a list of English-speaking doctors and therapists.

Since the search for English-speaking therapists on site can be difficult, I would also like to recommend my online counseling to you.

Online Counseling for English Speakers Abroad

As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adjust to a new culture – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so alien.

In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways for you not only to survive in Lyon, but to lead a fulfilling life.

Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for English Speakers Abroad

What specific psychological challenges do English speakers in Lyon often face?

Many English speakers in Lyon struggle with finding accommodation, which is very competitive in the city. French bureaucracy and the job market, which differs from that in English-speaking countries, can also cause stress. Social isolation can occur when it is difficult to make contacts or master the language. Cultural differences that manifest in everyday life can lead to misunderstandings and frustration.

How can I deal with these challenges?

For finding accommodation, it is advisable to get information early and use local networks. When dealing with bureaucracy, it can help to seek support from experienced expats or counseling centers. To avoid social isolation, you should actively participate in local events, take language courses or join English-speaking clubs. In case of cultural misunderstandings, it can be helpful to communicate openly and ask questions to understand the backgrounds.

How do I find English-speaking psychological support in Lyon?

As it can be difficult to find English-speaking therapists in Lyon, I recommend my online counseling. This offers you the opportunity to talk about your problems in your native language without having to leave the house. You can also use online directories to find local therapists who speak English. However, please note that waiting times may vary and the costs may not be covered by French health insurance.

How do I deal with culture shock in Lyon?

Culture shock is a normal reaction to a new environment. It is important to take the time to get to know the city and the culture. Try to be open to new experiences and not to orient yourself too much on your old home. Seek contact with other expats to exchange ideas and support each other. If you feel overwhelmed, do not hesitate to seek professional help.

What can I do about homesickness and isolation in Lyon?

Homesickness and isolation are common feelings among expats. To counteract this, you should regularly keep in touch with your family and friends at home. At the same time, it is important to build a new social network in Lyon. Visit local events, get involved in clubs or groups that match your interests, or take language courses. Regular exercise and hobbies can also help to increase well-being.

How do language barriers affect my mental health and what resources are available?

Language barriers can lead to frustration, isolation and a feeling of helplessness. It is important to learn the French language as well as possible in order to integrate better. Use language courses, apps or tandem partners to improve your language skills. Do not hesitate to ask for help if you do not understand something. If you feel heavily burdened by the language barrier, psychological counseling in your native language can help.

What are the most common conflicts between English speakers and French speakers and how can I deal with them?

English speakers and French speakers often differ in their directness and communication style. English speakers tend to address things directly, while French speakers often communicate more indirectly and value harmony. This can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. It is important to be aware of cultural differences and to adapt communication accordingly. Try to understand the other person's perspective and communicate respectfully. If conflicts arise, address them openly, but be sure to do so in a respectful and diplomatic manner.
