Psychologist & Consultant

It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for psychological support in Aarhus. I understand what it feels like to be far from home. Life as an expat offers so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture, and that feeling of having one foot in two worlds – it can all be quite nerve-wracking. Especially when the quiet sets in, homesickness can become overwhelming, leaving you feeling uprooted. You are not alone.

As an online psychologist, I understand the unique difficulties you face as an expat. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep cropping up in everyday life, and that feeling of identity loss that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be.

My goal here is to show you both local options in Aarhus that can help you and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an expat – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who truly understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.

  • I am Sally Schulze

    I am Sally Schulze

I always get asked: Sally, do you take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.

I succeed in this by taking care of myself. Here, "practise what you preach" applies to me. So you can find me not only at MentalStark, in TED talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. This is how I recharge my batteries and then start again at full speed.

Online Counseling for Expats

As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming adapting to a new culture can be – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and you sometimes can't even explain why you feel so strange.

In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways how you can not only survive in Aarhus, but lead a fulfilling life.

Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from another cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from Expats

How can I deal with the feeling of cultural uprooting?

The feeling of standing between two cultures is a common experience among expats. In psychological counseling, we work to preserve your original identity while integrating new cultural elements. We develop strategies for you to feel connected to home while building a fulfilling life in Aarhus. This may mean consciously maintaining original traditions while exploring and appreciating Danish customs.

How do I cope with loneliness and feelings of isolation?

Loneliness is one of the biggest challenges for expats. In our sessions, we develop practical strategies for building a social network in Aarhus - from original communities to international groups to Danish circles. At the same time, we work on deeper feelings of isolation and find ways for you to feel connected to yourself even in moments of loneliness.

How do I find my identity between two cultures?

The question "Who am I?" often arises with new urgency abroad. In our work, I support you in developing an integrated identity that encompasses both your original roots and your new experiences in Denmark. We explore which aspects of your culture you want to preserve and where you are open to change. The goal is that you don't feel torn between cultures, but enriched by both.

How do I deal with language barriers and communication difficulties?

Language challenges can lead to deep frustration - especially if you can't express yourself as eloquently as in your native language. In our sessions, you can speak in your native tongue and express your feelings precisely. At the same time, we develop strategies for dealing with language barriers in everyday life, from practical communication techniques to dealing with the feeling of not being fully understood.

How do I navigate relationships across cultural boundaries?

Relationships - whether with a Danish partner, colleagues or friends - can become more complex due to cultural differences. In psychological counseling, we work on intercultural understanding and communication. We identify cultural misunderstandings and develop bridges of understanding. For pairs, I help to understand the different communication styles and expectations, which are often culturally shaped.

How do I cope with professional stress and adaptation to a new work culture?

Danish work culture often differs significantly from others. In our collaboration, I support you in deciphering the unwritten rules of Danish working life and developing strategies to be successful professionally without compromising your own values. We also work on stress management techniques that help you master the additional stresses of working life abroad.

How does original and Danish behavior differ in conflict situations?

A common misunderstanding arises from different conflict resolution styles. While a direct approach is often valued in the original country, Danes often prefer a more indirect, consensus-oriented approach. In our psychological counseling, we work out how you can address conflicts in a way that is understood in your Danish environment without feeling like you are denying yourself. You will learn to better read cultural signals and adapt your communication accordingly.
