Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
Welcome! We're so glad you've found your way to our page for English-speaking psychological support in Odessa. I understand what it feels like to be far from home, especially in a city like Odessa, which is so rich in history and culture but also presents its own unique challenges. Expat life offers so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new culture – from the bustling markets of Pryvoz to the serene shores of the Black Sea – and that feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of this can really take a toll. Especially when the silence sets in, homesickness can become overwhelming, leaving you feeling uprooted. Please know that you are not alone.
As an online psychologist, I understand the unique difficulties that await you as an English speaker abroad, especially in Odessa. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep cropping up in everyday life, whether it's negotiating in the market or trying to understand the complicated traffic rules, and that feeling of loss of identity that's so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be.
My goal here is to show you both local resources in Odessa that can help you, and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an English speaker abroad – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can offer you advice and support.
I often hear the question: Sally, do you take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I manage to do this by taking care of myself. The following applies to me: Practise what you preach. So you will find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge my batteries and then get back to work at full speed.
As a licensed psychological psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as an English speaker abroad deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.
Unfortunately, there are currently no English-speaking psychologists based in Odessa. Finding psychological support in your native language can be a challenge in this region. This makes online counseling a particularly valuable option.
As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adjust to a new culture – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so alienated.
In my online counseling, we create a safe space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Odessa, but to lead a fulfilling life.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory meeting with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are also welcome to make appointments by email. I look forward to getting to know you and working together to find a way for you to not only survive in Odessa, but to really arrive.

In Odessa, many English speakers experience challenges related to the job market, which is often uncertain. Difficulties in finding accommodation, especially if you are not familiar with local customs, can also be stressful. In addition, social isolation can occur, as it can be difficult to make new contacts in a foreign culture, and cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings. The current political and economic situation in Ukraine can exacerbate these challenges.
To deal with the challenges in Odessa, it is important to actively seek support. Get involved in expat groups or English-Ukrainian associations to make contacts. Use online platforms to find accommodation and seek advice from experienced expats. Set yourself realistic goals for your job search and be open to alternative forms of employment. And above all: Be patient with yourself and allow yourself time to adjust.
As there are limited English-speaking psychologists in Odessa, online counseling is an excellent option. On our website you will find information about online counseling services specifically tailored to the needs of expats. When choosing a counselor, pay attention to their qualifications and experience in dealing with intercultural issues. You can find information on costs and possible insurance coverage on the respective websites of the providers. Waiting times for appointments may vary, so it is advisable to inquire early.
Culture shock in Odessa can manifest itself through feelings of confusion, frustration and being overwhelmed. To cope with it, it is important to actively engage with Ukrainian culture. Visit local markets like Pryvoz, try traditional dishes like Borscht or Vareniki and learn some basic Ukrainian words. At the same time, you should cultivate your own cultural roots by reading English books, watching English films or staying in contact with your family and friends at home.
Homesickness and isolation are common companions of expat life. To counteract these feelings, it is important to actively make social contacts. Look for English or international regulars' tables, get involved in sports clubs or attend cultural events. Regular contact with family and friends at home can also help to maintain the connection with home. And don't forget: it's okay to feel lonely sometimes. Allow yourself to accept these feelings and seek professional support if needed.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings and social isolation. To minimise these effects, it is advisable to attend a language course or enter into a language tandem partnership. Use online translation tools to facilitate communication in everyday life. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something. And remember: even if communication is sometimes bumpy, most people in Odessa are very helpful and patient.
Typical points of conflict between English speakers and Ukrainians can lie in different communication styles, expectations of punctuality and ways of working. While English speakers often value directness and efficiency, Ukrainians may prefer a more indirect, relationship-oriented approach. To avoid conflict, it is important to learn about cultural differences and understand the other person's perspective. Be patient, ask questions and try to find common ground. And if misunderstandings do arise, address them openly and respectfully.
