Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
It's wonderful that you've found your way to our page for psychological support in Barcelona. I truly understand what it feels like to be far from home. Expat life holds so many exciting possibilities, but it can also be a rollercoaster of emotions. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of navigating a new and often chaotic culture, and that feeling of having one foot in two worlds – all of that can be incredibly taxing. Especially when the "fiesta" is over and everyday life sets in, homesickness can become overwhelming and you might feel uprooted. Please know that you are not alone.
As an Online Psychologist, I deeply understand the unique challenges that await you as an expat. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings that keep cropping up in daily life, and that feeling of loss of identity that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be, especially amidst the vibrant bustle of Barcelona.
My goal here is to show you both local resources in Barcelona that can help you, and to introduce you to my Online Counseling services. This is specifically designed to support you as an expat – no matter where you are or what challenges you are facing. Because sometimes you simply need someone who truly understands your situation and can offer advice and support, far from the Ramblas.
I often hear the question: Sally, do you ever take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert, and entrepreneur, I'm passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I manage this by taking care of myself. For me, it's all about: Practise what you preach. So you'll find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks, or podcasting. No. You'll also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake, or snowboarding. In the picture here on the right, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. That's how I recharge and then get back to it full throttle.
As a licensed Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
A trusting relationship is particularly important to me in our collaboration. Your experiences as an expat deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.

As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic online psychological counseling. I understand how overwhelming adjusting to a new culture can be – when the language sounds beautiful, but you still often can't express yourself properly, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so foreign.
In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity questions are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways for you to not only survive in Barcelona, but to live a fulfilling life.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background – my Couples Counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory call with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are also welcome to make appointments by email. I look forward to getting to know you and working together to find a way for you to not only survive in Barcelona, but to truly arrive.

Many expats in Barcelona struggle with adapting to Spanish culture, especially the more relaxed lifestyle and often informal work structures. In addition, finding accommodation in Barcelona can be very frustrating, and social isolation, especially when Spanish is not yet fluent, is a common burden. Bureaucracy can also be a challenge.
There are several ways to make connections in Barcelona. Look for expat groups on Meetup or Facebook. Take language classes to improve your Spanish and meet locals. Get involved in sports clubs or other leisure activities. Volunteering can also be a good way to meet new people while doing something meaningful. Remember, it takes time to make friends, so be patient and open.
In addition to my online counseling, there are also several English-speaking psychologists in Barcelona who offer in-person appointments (see list above). You can also search online for "English-speaking psychologist Barcelona". Make sure the psychologist is qualified and experienced and that you feel comfortable with them. An initial consultation can be helpful to find out if the chemistry is right.
Waiting times may vary depending on the psychologist and their availability. It is advisable to contact several psychologists and ask. Online counseling can often be a faster alternative, as scheduling is often more flexible.
The cost of psychological counseling in Barcelona varies. Some German health insurance companies cover the costs of online counseling if certain conditions are met (please check with your insurance company). For in-person appointments, you usually have to pay yourself, unless you have private Spanish health insurance that covers psychological services.
Homesickness is a normal feeling when you are far from home. It is important to take active steps against it. Stay in touch with family and friends back home, but at the same time try to integrate into Barcelona. Explore the city, visit museums and sights, try the local cuisine. Find hobbies and get involved in clubs or groups. It is also helpful to be aware of why you came to Barcelona and what you want to achieve here. Talk about your feelings with other expats or seek professional support.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, social isolation, and feelings of helplessness. It's important to actively work to improve your Spanish. There are numerous language schools in Barcelona that offer courses for all levels. Also use online resources such as apps and websites. Try to talk to locals, even if it's difficult at first. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, because that's how you learn. If you feel overwhelmed, psychological counseling in your native language can help you cope with the challenges.
Differences in punctuality, working methods, and direct communication can lead to misunderstandings. Germans often value punctuality and efficiency, while Spaniards are more relaxed. It is important to be aware that there are cultural differences and to be tolerant. Try to adapt to Spanish culture, but remain authentic at the same time. Talk openly about your expectations and try to find a compromise. Humor can help defuse difficult situations. If major conflicts arise, professional intercultural counseling can be helpful.
