Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
It's wonderful that you've found our page for English-speaking psychological support in Palermo. I understand what it feels like to be far from home. Life as an expat holds so many wonderful experiences, but it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenge of finding your way in a new culture—amidst the scent of lemons and the roar of Vespas, and that feeling of standing with one foot in two worlds—all of this can really take a toll. Especially when the silence settles in as you gaze out over the bay of Mondello, homesickness can become overwhelming and create a feeling of being uprooted. You are not alone in this.
As an online psychologist, I understand the unique difficulties that await you as an English speaker abroad. It's often not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It's the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings when haggling in the Ballarò market, that pop up again and again in everyday life, and that feeling of loss of identity that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how draining that can be.
My goal here is to show you both local resources in Palermo that can help you, as well as to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an English speaker abroad—no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can offer help and advice.
I constantly hear the question: Sally, do you even take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert, and entrepreneur, I'm passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I manage to do this by taking care of myself. Here, for me, it's: Practice what you preach. So you'll find me not only at MentalStark, in TED Talks, or podcasting. No. You'll also find me in Frankfurt cafés, by the lake, or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I'm enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. This is how I recharge my batteries and then get back into it full throttle.
As a licensed Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance—I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as an English speaker abroad deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.
Unfortunately, there are currently no known English-speaking psychologists directly in Palermo. This can make the search for psychological support more difficult, as it is important to be able to express oneself in one's native language, especially when it comes to sensitive topics. But I offer you an alternative:
As an experienced Psychological Psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming the adaptation to a new culture can be—when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so foreign.
In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity questions occupy you, or homesickness weighs you down—together we will find ways in which you can not only survive in Palermo, but lead a fulfilling life.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis—perhaps even with a partner from a different cultural background—my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory meeting with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are welcome to make appointments by e-mail as well. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together how you can not only survive in Palermo, but really arrive.

In Palermo, English speakers may face challenges such as adjusting to a slower pace of life, bureaucracy, and a strong focus on family. Finding a job can be difficult, as Italian language skills are often essential and networking plays a large role. The housing situation, characterized by old buildings and specific rental conditions, can also cause stress. Social isolation can arise if connecting with the local population is difficult and English-speaking networks are lacking.
It's important to have realistic expectations about finding a job and housing, and to actively work on acquiring language skills. Building a social network through local clubs, language courses, or expat groups can be very helpful. Accept that Italian culture is different and try to adapt to it without losing your own values. Schedule regular contact with family and friends back home to maintain connections to your homeland.
Since it is difficult to find English-speaking psychologists in Palermo, online counseling is a good alternative. When choosing a psychologist, look for someone with experience in intercultural counseling. Ask local doctors or international networks for recommendations for Italian psychologists if you prefer in-person counseling in Italian. Waiting times for an appointment can vary, so it's advisable to inquire early.
Culture shock is a normal reaction to a new environment. Allow yourself to grieve the loss of what is familiar. Be curious and open to Italian culture, but don't overwhelm yourself. Seek out exchanges with other expats to feel understood. Schedule regular "English" days where you consciously connect with your culture. And be patient with yourself – adaptation takes time.
Homesickness and isolation are common companions of expat life. Try to develop a routine that gives you structure. Get involved in local clubs or groups that match your interests. Take trips to the area around Palermo to discover the beauty of Sicily. Use modern technologies to stay in regular contact with family and friends. And don't forget to do something good for yourself – be it a relaxing bath, a good book, or a delicious meal.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and feelings of isolation. Use language courses and language exchanges to improve your Italian skills. Don't be afraid to make mistakes – most Italians appreciate it when you make an effort to speak their language. Seek contact with other expats who have had similar experiences. And use online translation tools to facilitate communication. If language barriers become too burdensome, psychological counseling in English can help you process your feelings and develop strategies.
Differences in punctuality, work ethic, and direct communication can lead to conflict. While English speakers often value efficiency and structure, Italians tend to be more flexible and spontaneous. Try to understand the cultural differences and accept that there are different ways of doing things. Communicate your expectations clearly, but also be willing to compromise. Humor can help relieve tension. And remember that you are a guest in another country – show respect for the local culture and traditions.
