Psychological Psychotherapist (CBT) Sally Schulze
Welcome to our page for psychological support in Genoa, tailored for English-speaking expats. We understand the unique challenges of life abroad. Being an expat is an amazing adventure, but it can also feel like an emotional rollercoaster. The longing for family and friends, the challenges of navigating a new culture, and the feeling of having one foot in two worlds can be incredibly stressful. Perhaps, as you wander the streets of the old city in the evening, watching the city lights shimmering on the water, feelings of homesickness can become overwhelming, leaving you feeling uprooted. Please know that you are not alone.
As an online psychologist, I understand the very specific difficulties that await you as an English-speaker abroad. Often, it's not just the obvious things like cultural differences or language barriers. It’s the subtle nuances, the small misunderstandings when ordering a Pesto Genovese, that repeatedly crop up in everyday life, creating a feeling of identity loss that is so hard to grasp and put into words. I know how exhausting that can be.
My goal here is to show you both local resources in Genoa that can help you and to introduce you to my online counseling. This is specifically designed to support you as an English-speaker abroad – no matter where you are or what challenges you face. Because sometimes you just need someone who really understands your situation and can help you with advice and support.
I often get asked the question: Sally, do you ever take time for yourself? The answer is: Yes! As a speaker, expert and entrepreneur, I am passionate about women's health. But I don't burn out.
I manage to do this by taking care of myself. Here the motto for me is: Practice what you preach. So you will find me not only at MentalStark, in TED talks or podcasting. No. You can also find me in Frankfurt cafes, by the lake or on the snowboard. In the picture here on the right, I am enjoying the sun and the fresh sea breeze. This is how I recharge my batteries and then get back to work full of energy.
As a licensed psychological psychotherapist (CBT) and certified fertility counselor (BKiD), I bring more than 3,000 hours of experience in online counseling. My approach is based on appreciation and radical acceptance – I create a safe space where you feel understood and accepted.
In our collaboration, a trusting relationship is particularly important to me. Your experiences as an English-speaker abroad deserve special attention and understanding, because life between two cultures brings unique challenges.
Unfortunately, there are currently no English-speaking psychologists practicing in Genoa. This can make it difficult to find adequate psychological support, especially if you feel better understood in English. I would be happy to help you find alternatives.
As an experienced psychological psychotherapist, I offer you empathetic psychological online counseling. I understand how overwhelming it can be to adjust to a new culture – when the language sounds foreign, the social codes are different, and sometimes you can't even explain why you feel so alien.
In my online counseling, we create a protected space where you can talk about all these feelings in your native language. Whether you feel torn between cultures, identity issues are bothering you, or homesickness is weighing you down – together we will find ways how you can not only survive in Genoa, but lead a fulfilling life.
Even if you are in a relationship crisis – perhaps even with a partner from another cultural background – my couples counseling is a valuable support to build cultural bridges and find your way back to each other.
The 20-minute introductory call with me is free of charge. Check completely without obligation whether the chemistry is right and ask your open questions. You are also welcome to make appointments by email. I look forward to getting to know you and finding a way together how you can not only survive in Genoa, but really arrive.

In Genoa, many English-speakers experience challenges such as language barriers that complicate everyday life and difficulties in building a social network. Living in a foreign culture, especially when it comes to socioeconomic differences, can lead to feelings of isolation and stress. The search for suitable housing and uncertainty regarding the recognition of qualifications in the Italian labor market can be additional burdens.
It is important to actively attend Italian courses and make Italian friends in order to overcome the language barrier and integrate better. Use the local expat networks and English-Italian cultural associations to make contacts and exchange ideas. Get involved in local clubs or initiatives to develop a sense of belonging. Find out more about the Italian job market and use advice services for expats to improve your career prospects. If necessary, psychological counseling can help you cope with stress and adjustment difficulties.
Since there are currently no English-speaking psychologists in Genoa, online counseling is a good alternative. You can search for English-speaking psychologists through online platforms and make appointments. Make sure the platform is secure and confidential. The costs for online counseling vary. Clarify in advance whether your health insurance will cover part of the costs. Waiting times for an appointment may vary, so it is advisable to make an appointment early.
Genoa is a city with a rich history and unique culture. It is normal to experience culture shock at the beginning. Try to stay open and curious and focus on the positive aspects of Italian culture. Find out about local customs and traditions in advance to avoid misunderstandings. Seek exchange with other expats to support each other and share experiences. Be patient with yourself and give yourself time to get used to the new environment.
Homesickness and isolation are common companions of expats. Try to keep in regular contact with family and friends back home, but do not neglect building a social network on site. Get involved in local groups or clubs that match your interests. Regularly attend cultural events and festivals to connect with the local culture. Take trips to the surroundings of Genoa to discover the beauty of the region. If the feelings of homesickness and isolation become overwhelming, do not hesitate to seek professional help.
Language barriers can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, and social isolation, which can negatively affect your mental health. Use language courses and tandem partners to improve your Italian language skills. Do not hesitate to ask for help if you do not understand something. There are numerous online resources and apps that can help you learn languages. If you feel strongly burdened by the language barrier, psychological counseling in your native language can be helpful.
Germans and Italians differ in their mentality, communication style, and social customs. Germans are often more direct and structured, while Italians tend to be more informal and flexible. Try to understand the cultural differences and adapt without losing your own identity. Be patient and tolerant of other behaviors. Communicate openly and honestly to avoid misunderstandings. If you have difficulty dealing with cultural differences, intercultural counseling can be helpful.
